loud bangs...?

I asked this in my DJ topic, but not as many people actually read anything there as they do here. Alright, so this morning I woke up to the incredibly loud, earsplitting sound of 3 bangs, as if someone was pounding on my bedroom door. The trouble is that the sounds had to have been completely within my own head, because other people in my family were awake at the time and didn’t hear anything. I was dreaming when I woke up, but the sounds were completely unrelated to anything in my dream. (at the time, I was walking around my school in just my boxers…) I’ve never heard of anything like this before, does anyone have an explanation?

I practically jumped out of bed when I heasrd this, and I can’t stress enough just how loud it was. Another thing that suggests the sound was in my head is that even with the volume of it, my ears didn’t really hurt at all.

I realy cant explain what it is but i can tell you that i have experienced
this same thing before.
i think its hypnosonic noise or something cus it usualy happens right before reaching sleep or waking state…

konnart I think you’re right. Some people, including myself, report hearing loud noises when they are in the hypnagogic or hypnopompic states, and also when they enter SP. When I tried to WILD for the first time I heard a loud helicopter sound. I don’t really know why this happens though.

Yes, Dark Sider is correct. This morning while in the hypnagogic stage when i was in trance i heard a loud popping sound. It sounds like popping a balloon. Normally i would have been quite scared but ive heard about the same sound on another forum and i was happy to read that i was close to SP.

Wierd, when I enter a SP state I hear people calling my name. Is that the hypnagogic sounds? Or am I just crazy?

No you’re not crazy. It actually varies from one experience to another. One time I heard some opera, other times, I heard some people talking to me, or screaming.

Bangs, cracks, small sentences, etc. are common in hypnagogic/hypnopompic states. I sometimes hear my name, and more funny, my phone bell. That’s hypnagogic sounds… or I’m crazy too…

Yeap, seems that it is very common phenomena. Sometimes (especially when i’m very tired) i’m shaken out of half-sleep by high volume bang. And sometimes my dreams end with certain bang, or noise too and i wake up IRL.

But as about running with your boxers in school…was it embarrassing in dream, or was it OK? If first one, i think it’s somehow related with your fear of being embarrassed by certain things IMO.

It wasn’t embarrassing in the dream. I was trying to cover it up, but the only reason that I came up with for that was it wasn’t appropriate.

Anyway, it’s nice to know that other people have had this experience and I’m not the only one. I haven’t ever had this before, and I think it’s a little weird that so many dreamers would have this but I haven’t ever heard it from other people. Maybe they just don’t talk about it or we, as lucid dreamers, are just more aware of the sleep state so we notice it or something but it seems like an awfully big coincidence. Does anyone know the exact cause of it?

Have had this a few times, posted about it but didnt get much replies. Usually happens to me in periods while trying to sleep. It’s like this sonic boom, that startles me awake. Really loud.

HH, I’d say. I experience this sometimes, but not that extreme. It’s frustrating, because it wakes me up. I’ve been able to control the sounds (i. e. music) to some degree, though.

Exact cause? Isn’t that the first stage of sleep? The one in which you think you’re awake, but you have some random stupid thoughts.

Except it couldn’t be the first stage of sleep because I was dreaming when it happened…

I do get hypnagogic sounds as well. For the more elaborate ones like people speaking or something like that, they aren’t as vivid as more basic sounds. I’ve heard knocking at my door, telephone ringing and such, which sound as real as if they were actually happening.

When i go into the hypnagogic state i dont get many visual images though i get an amazing amount of sounds. The people talk to me and stuff, sometimes i even respond to them to make them shutup.

Today morning while using WBTB i heard like someone hitting wardrobe. So, yeah, happen while trying to fall back to sleep.

:shy: sorry, didn’t read it carefully… :shy:

hmm, the question for us HSI (Hypnagogic Sound Inclined).

Can the sounds help us in any way? All they seem to do is make my imagination more real and make me fall asleep.

We can learn to control the sounds, then use it in WILD to go faster into sleep, or in MILD to visualise a situation better.

I have no idea what can cause this but I had a similar thing happen, but it only happened once to me that I can ever remember. About six months ago, I was sleeping, and there are a lot of owls in this are. They are not very loud, but sometimes I can hear them from my room.

One morning I was sleeping and all the sudden I am awakened by a very very loud noise made by an owl. But it echoed loudly. I had even sat up while echoed. I would say it echoed about five times, and I was wide awake during the last few echos… It scared me.

For a few minutes I thought there was an owl in my room possibly. But then I realized that was impossible.

i’ve only had this happen once as i was falling asleep. i had no idea what it was but at the time i was just slipping into HH when i heard inside my head a gunshot sound. i wasn’t into dreaming at the time but i looked it up on the internet on medical sites. i found that people suffering from stress experience this occasionally.
