Lucidity and intellectual thought

  1. I lucid dream fairly regularly through WBTB & critical RC.
  2. I wish to expand my intellectual horizons while in lucidity, rather than do the same exciting things.

I notice I tend towards exciting things while I’m lucid. I’d like to explore more intellectual topics such as the limits of imagination or practicing visual mnemonics. While awake I’m quite analytical and spend a good deal of my time in philosophy-esque persuits. I find it a strange dichotomy that lucidity should invoke my desires primarily.

From a brief look over into topics posted on this forum I notice it’s common to do things which are exciting. e.g. sexual experiences or super powers. I’d like to stray away from this, do any of you have any tips? Particularly with emphasis on a western philosophy (not necessarily empiricism) rather than a new age or eastern views.

If you wish to respond in a spiritualistic or new age way please refrain from responding at this time. There’s a time and place for that discussion. I appreciate your experience and patience.

Be sure to set yourself goals and repeat those before going to sleep, you’re more likely to actually remember them instead of doing any other random stuff. Your goals should be at least a little bit specific, not just “I want to explore the limits of imagination”, think about how you want to do that. As soon as you get lucid, calm down and stabilize the dream. Then simply stand there for a few seconds, observe what is happening around you, think of your goal and about what would be the best way to achieve it in this dream.

A little advice though: Like with everything, find the balance regarding your goal. You need the demand to reach your goal, but don’t clutch it, don’t be too uptight. In my experience, this is counterproductive and won’t lead you anywhere. Remain flexible and willing to interact with the dream, use the dream for your goals.
