MILD vs WILD? Difference?

Ive seen descriptions of MILD and WILD but from what i’ve read there doesn’t seem to be much difference. I know there must be because that’s why they have different names but would someone care to point out the differences to me? I just got the idea that they were both based around focusing on one spot on your body and repeating something to yourself like “I am dreaming”
Thanks for your help.

WILD stands for Wake Initiated (or Induced) Lucid Dream, and it explicitly requires that you first sleep a few hours, then wake up. Most of us use the term WILD when we’re describing the rare ability to enter a dream from the waking state, without losing consciousness even for a second. Since the first 90 minutes of sleep are dreamless, this is only possible for most people after already passing that barrier, then briefly waking up and returning where you left off.

MILD (Mnemonic Initiated Lucid Dream) is a more prospective technique designed to teach your mind to recognize when it’s dreaming. Generally the method is used just before going to bed, but unlike WILD, it doesn’t imply that you’re attempting to enter a dream directly. When practiced enough, MILD allows you to recognize when you’re experiencing a dream and to take control of it. Both methods can include counting, or performing some other repetitive task to occupy the conscious mind, but they differ in their application.

Just to confuse you a little more, you’ll hear the acronym WBTB (Wake Back To Bed) used a lot to describe the technique of waking up, reminding yourself to LD, and returning to sleep. This is different to WILD in that you aren’t necessarily intending to return to sleep consciously, just that you actually woke up for a brief moment. Of course, WILD relies on you already using WBTB just to set it up, so they’re pretty closely related.

Thats a very, very good description.I remember times when i just couldnt get all the differences or similarities, didnt know how you all can say what is what. After a while i finally got into it but if i had Atheist help back then id be wiser much sooner:)

You two have been coming here for quite some time haven’t you? Is there no end to your knowledge of lucid dreaming?

Well…i guess its a passion:)
And additonally ,this topic is so wide and so little known yet that i guess we will have something to do about it till the end of our lifes:)
Even if theres nothing left to read or see we`ll still have our skills to sharpen…and when the day of brain chip comes…then im off here:)

i just realised what the letters on your avatar’s hat say. lol. I never noticed that before!

If you were a girl you would have sensed it without reading.Males are different though,i get used to that it takes time before they admit what they see:)

Just out of interest, how old are you?

Lol! That is quite possible since when I first joined that ld4all forum, I immediately notice your avatar. I remember that so clearly. I laughed so hard when I saw that!

Ok, in attempt to reduce the confusion… I will summarize the whole thing…

WILD: Falling asleep consciously and totally aware.
MILD: Stating some simple intentions before falling asleep, but no consciousness or awareness is required.
WBTB: Waking up after approx. 6 hours of sleep and then return to bed within one hour.

WILD and/or MILD can be used for WBTB. In most case, it is usually required for WILD technique to be successful unless you’re a natural WILDer or is expert with meditating/yoga.

Hope I am making senses here.

lol I too noticed this the first time I saw your avatar. :peek:

thanks DM7, makes perfect sense now. :content:

Whew! No problem! I was afraid that maybe I’ve cause more confusion than I tend to.
