Need help increasing vividness?

Hi everyone! In this post I’ll be sharing with you all a personal exercise that I have been using for a long time now. This exercise can help increase vividness to help
induce lucidity by creating vivid mental imagery and will also help you vividly remember your dreams.

I personally call this exercise My imaginary stories

Note
The key to this exercise is detail. Detail, detail, detail
Examples will be given for demonstration

Here is how the exercise works:

Things you will need:
A Pen/Pencil or PC to type
Paper if you will be using a pen or pencil

  1. Okay, so the first step is to think of a place where you want to be. It can be completely made up, A fantasy if you will; doing so will allow you to get into great detail because everything will be to your liking. No imagination? That’s perfectly fine, you can think of a place you’ve always wanted to visit or a place where you’ve been to before that you want to re-visit. Doing the latter, you might want to do some google research to find out what it’s like in that place.

The examples used are excerpts taken from my journal
Example: A shore near a forest (An imaginary place)

  1. This is where the exercise gets into gear. Once you’ve decided on a place you would like to be, start thinking about the things around you; things you see, feel, hear, smell and taste. Write down the details in any order or format you feel comfortable with.
Note: There is no need to worry about grammar mistakes since this is a personal exercise. You know, unless you are going to turn this in as some kind of assignment.

Example: As I sat on the grainy white sands, gentle salted breeze’s coming from the ocean kindly caressed my face as I looked out into the vast blue waters. Clenching the soft sand below me, I was reminded that I was not alone; behind me I could hear the chirps of crickets, the singing of birds, and an occasional distant roar from tigers. I then wandered into the crystal-clear water and started to spot out as many different fish as I could.

Note how I used most of the 5 senses and linked the things surrounding me to them.

Another good thing about this exercise is that you can do it anywhere!. Though you won’t always have a pen and paper next to you, you can always do mental notes or even write them down on your phone. If you do plan on doing this while out and about or even at home, all you have to do is close your eyes and feel everything around you using your five senses. Whether it be the constant chit-chat of people walking by or the revving of automobiles of people trying to get to their destinations.

By completing this exercise, the more you do it the close it becomes a habit for you to grab the detail in your surrounds. Thus enabling you to remember more things about your dreams, by being able to elaborate. Just like everything else, this takes practice and time.

Hopefully I’ve covered everything but feel free to ask questions!

Moved from General Lucidness. :dragon:

I really should give this a try. More vivid dreams would be great  and I’d love to get better at visualizing things in my mind’s eye. I hope it’s ok to do this all in my mind? For example when I’m having a hard time falling asleep, I’ll try to narrate everything in my mind (maybe even imagine hearing my own voice)… and see how that goes

Yes! you can do this in your head. In fact, I started off doing this in my head. I started writing things down only because I wanted to elaborate on my detailing skills.
