New LD'er (hopefully)!

Hi guys,

After hearing about Lucid Dreaming and doing some research I think it’s safe to say that I’m obsessed with it! Unfortunately I haven’t yet experienced one and I’m looking to try and have my first LD asap. I just had a few questions really, first off do any experienced LD’ers have any tips? I hear that keeping a DJ is the most important thing to do so I’m not going to be lazy and I’m going to start doing that.

Thanks in advance and I’ll keep you posted!

Hey,

First of all, Welcome! :welcome:

You’re doing pretty much perfectly, you’re keeping a DJ which is good and is one of the main things. I’ve just a couple of additions.

One of the main things as well as a DJ is RC’s (Reality Checks). A reality check is really what the name says, a check of reality. Basically, you do it to see if you’re dreaming or not. If you get into a habit of doing RC’s, you may do one during a dream and BAM! You become lucid :lucid: . If you need some help with RC’s or ideas, click here.

Good luck on your quest,
Rich

P.S. I’m addicted to LD’ing aswell

Thanks for the speedy reply, a couple of reality checks I’ve thought of doing is, looking at my hand, looking at my watch and also pinching myself. There about the only things I can do at work without me looking crazy! Thanks for the advice and I’ll definitely keep you posted on how I’m doing. I’m pretty sure I’ll become an addict as well, and proud of it!

Edit: Actually I forgot to ask one question when making this topic. How often can you LD when you’re actually trying to? Is it hit and miss or is it pretty much on the dot every time?

Welcome TheArtfulDodger!

Keeping a DJ is like the fundamental key to getting lucid. You’ll increase your dream recall since your brain gets used to having to remember your dreams and you’ll be able to get an overlook on “What objects or scenarios do I often encounter in my dream that I could use as a trigger to realize I’m dreaming?”.

Doing reality checks is also a really good idea, since it will eventually result in random lucid dreams when you in your dream simply decide to check if you’re dreaming. And if you’d get lucid in any other way, you’d want to be able to test your reality, to really confirm you are in a dream, and to remind yourself of that as your lucidity might be fading.

My one personal tip though is; Know when to take a break.
When I first learned about lucid dreaming I had never had one (that I could remember), and I spent 3 months actively trying to have a lucid dream. After that, I just gave up saying “This is too much… I guess I simply wont have one”. That same night that I stopped obsessing over having a lucid dream, I actually had one. So don’t try too hard - Take breaks where you let your mind rest, and nights where you simply dont think about lucid dreaming. Then after a while when you’ve had a couple of them (Which you will - Many and many) you’ll kind of get a hang of it, how it works - And it wont be such a big task. Cos right now I imagine lucid dreaming to you is this great thing that you just have to experience, and that’s quite some pressure to put on your mind. Once you’ve achieved it and know you can do it, it’ll just be this relaxed thing you do.

How is pinching yourself a good reality check? o.O The one I find the most reliable is the one where you pinch your nose, and then try to breathe out (through it). IRL it obviously wont work, but in your dream there really isnt anything blocking your nose in real life, so you’ll be able to breathe freely.

It is a lot Hit and Miss - But also a lot of having to know yourself and how you get lucid.

Hey again,

The 1st 2 RC’s are good, but pinching yourself in a dream as a RC won’t work. Here’s why.

All your senses are bit’s of information coming from parts of your body to your brain. Your brain then interprets these in the appropriate way. When you are dreaming, your body is asleep but your mind is awake (That’s what dreaming is). Since within a dream, your real senses are pretty much shut off, your brain simulates your senses within your dream. Because of this, in a dream, you can feel every sense you can in real life, including pain. This is a common mistake that a few people make, as pinching yourself in a dream will still hurt.

As I said you can look at the link I put in my post above ^^^ yours for a different RC or you can use one (or more) of mine. The ones I do are look at my nose through the corner of my eye (You don’t see your nose in a dream), try and stick your thumb through your hand and try to think how you get here. Usually you can’t remember how you got here.

Good Luck,
Rich
