Sometimes for becoming lucid sometimes even an opposite thing is required: switching from being blindly absorbing by “external” subjects to noticing the “internal” state of mind (though everything is in fact internal, naturally).
It sounds to me like dream yoga a bit, or a form of meditation.
Sounds like a good technique to me. Especially for people with sound stable minds.
