I’m getting kind of confused, because everyone says that you can’t read in a dream. I’ve experianced multiple NDs where I’ve been able to read. For example, one time I dreamed that I was late for my horseback riding lessons, and I looked at my watch. It was 7:30. My lesson started at 7:00. I ran around trying to get my stuff together. When I looked at my watch again, it was still 7:30. I looked at it closer and studied it. The time didn’t change. I thought Oh, crap! My watch is broken!
Another time, I distinctly remember reading a book. The letters didn’t change. And, last night, I had a dream where I was trying to find a certain breed of horses (Gypsy) but I couldn’t remember what it was called. I was looking in the ‘B’ section. I remember the words ‘Briarwood RC’ and ‘Brintone RC’ (RC! Duh! How could I have missed that?).
Whoever said you can’t read in dreams is wrong. I experienced many NDs where I could read stuff. Two days ago i was reading a menu and I remember seeing words like “pizza” and it costs ‘‘150’’.Maybe they wre talking about LDs, because i’ve never tried to read in a LD so I don’t know.
I think it has a lot to do with whether you keep paying full attention to it or not - in my experience, dreams try to keep what you’re paying attention to constant and detailed at the expense of other stuff, so if you let your attention wander you can lose it. Reading is certainly possible, what’s more difficult is keeping the words coherent while your thoughts move around. So if you read something, look away, and then read it again, there’s a good chance it’ll be at least slightly different. I once read a page of words, looked away, and then looked back to discover that it had turned into a big picture of Robin Williams’ head.
I don’t know if it’s possible to have something stay the same through multiple disconnected readings (I’ve never done it) but if so it probably has a lot to do with keeping your mind focused on it.
I can read in my dreams too, which means I can’t use text as a RC. It’s no big deal.
People who say you can’t read in dreams aren’t necessarily wrong. In general, most people can’t read in dreams, or they can and the text is inconsistent.
yeah, this is one of those things that vary from dreamer to dreamer. Text is pretty unstable in most of my dreams, but not all. I’ve read with no problem. Just like lights. Sometimes they do work in my dreams
The thing about lights just randomely reminded me of something… Whenever I have a nightmare, in it I always try the lightswitches and they don’t work. I get panicked and the nightmare begins. The thing is, I can’t always use that as an RC because people will notice if there’s somebody fiddling with the lights…
I can usually read anything except for lines of numbers (such as a phone number). The thing I have noticed is when I write something it almost always come out illegible.
If I stare at text long enough it will change. If I look away, it will probably change. It has happened that all the letters kepts flickering as they changed continuously at a fast rate. It has happened that the letters are apparently random. There have been words saying nonsense too. I have been able to read sometimes. But the text check is, for me, very reliable- Just so long as there is some text to use. Reading in drems as an enterprise has to me become rather a hopeless notion. For the same reasons, using a computer has too. There is no logic in it, and if I look at the keyboard while writing, all I had written until then is lost. So typing in a URL requires that I absolutely look at what I’m typing, and even then, it probably wont get me where I want to go. I wonder what it is that is different that makes me so unable to use text in dreams other than as a test, while some can read and reread a stable text. Doing a poll on this might be interesting.
What your hearing is that people can’t read in a dream. This is acculy true, it is just that our left brain is shut off. So the dream just tells you what something says, your mind doesn’t really inpret it. To your mind it is just a bunch of unreadable letters.
Well, if that was true, then the text RC wouldn’t work because your mind would just ‘tell’ you what it said and you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.
Hmm, happened in a lot of dreams that I could read
But I only remember a few texts from dreams: One text was on a tram as destination, it said “Bergsjön via Ekedal (PM me)” I was shocked and stunned I remember it as if it was yesterday.
So not being able to read in dreams is not true, but its harder to read
That is not true. The left hemipshere is not shut off. Besides, the old left-brain/right-brain dichotomy is not completely accurate. But even if it were, and the logical part of the brain was shut off as I’m sure is what you suggest here, how is it possible to become lucid? Is it a matter of awakening the left hemisphere? If so, why does becoming lucid not rid one of the dyslexia?
