Reading = Recall?

Guys, I’ve been blessed for a long time with some great recall.

In the last few years, though, my recall quality has been varying a lot. I blamed it on stress and worries, as well as some radical changes to my sleep schedule.

However, I’ve been doing an experiment lately that may prove me wrong, or at least partially wrong:

You see, I love reading. In fact, I’ve always read a lot, all my life. And along with the changes in my schedule, my reading times got a lot of variation as well.

In the past, I mostly read before going to bed, but I lost the habit. Now I usually checked out things in the internet or watched movies, series and whatnot before setting off to dreamland.

On the last 3 days, though, I read before going to bed, and got a lot of recall (at the time of this writing, I still got to post it all on my DJ, but I’ll get right to it after I’m done with this).

On the first day, it was mostly as an accident. I wanted to finish a comic book before sleeping. So I did, and wow, my recall was great. I thought up the theory the next day, and tried it again that night. It worked! On the third night I ended up going to bed late, but still managed to catch up on some reading and again got good recall (still, not as good as the other two nights, but I did get less sleep, so there’s that).

So here’s my theory: reading before bed = better recall. What do you guys think?

Oh, by the way, none of my reading was related to dreams. I mostly read issues of the Ranma 1/2 manga.

Very interesting! If I were to guess (emphasis on word guess), it has something to do with stimulating your mind before bed. Reading, perhaps, more so than something like watching a TV show since you actively have to pay attention and you are using your imagination to some extent. Even with comics, you’re imagining the dialogue or the movements between panels. In any case, it theoretically looks like keeping your imagination (or perhaps just mind in general) active is helping.

I’ve heard people say you should avoid reading or stimulation before bed to help recall. Personally, I’ve never paid attention. Maybe it’s time to look into it.

Your way of seeing it makes a lot of sense, so it’s some kind of brain exercise. Hmmm.

Regarding stimulation, I’ve actually heard about it (which would explain the movies and such), but I hadn’t heard it regarding reading specifically. This brings an interesting question - what do you do right before bed?

For me, normally I’m on the computer, but then I’ll relax before bed, maybe read web comics or read a story. I take longer to fall asleep so it tends to involve a let of daydreaming as well. Opposite of the stimulation theory, I’ve also found that clearing my mind and meditating helps… I wonder if boils down to personality and how quick you sleep. This might be worth a lab experiment XD

Very interesting.
Since I started my quest for LDing with no DR whatsoever, (my sole focus is still improving DR) I think I would be a good test subject for testing this theory’s validity.
