REM Relapse

I’ve heard of this with people who are alcoholics, because they sleep too deeply they skip vital parts of the sleep cycle and end up having REM relapse the day after (hallucinations not dissimilar to that of DMT-induced ones).

I also heard you can also get REM relapse for staying awake for more than 72 hours.

Does anyone know much about this?

Yes, it is true that alcohol can affect sleep schedules and staying up for long periods will induce REM relapse where mind basically sleeps longer than normal to make up for the lost time it needs to regenerate. This will make longer and more frequent REM cycles for a night or two.

However, it’s been my experience staying awake for long periods of time actually leads to decreased DR. Even after nights when I’ve been out with friends and had a bit too much to drink seem to negatively impact me in this way. All in all, I’d say REM relapse is something to avoid for both health reasons and DR reasons.

I have to say that I had few first LDs when I had alcohol in my blood, not too much but just enough to feel it, and I was very surprised by that.

But when too drunk then no DR, very interesting night and a hell of a hangover!
