Saying stuff you did not realize you knew in dreams

I have had plenty of experiences with dreams where I’ve been saying (or made up charracters) saying a lot of stuff I didn’t actually know that I knew. It is first when I wake up I realize, that I actually wasn’t aware I knew this.
I can mention a few examples:

  • I dreamt I talked with a doctor, and the doctor was saying all sorts of stuff that I had no idea my mind could actually make up in a dream

  • I dreamt I heard a song on the radio. I recalled it from real life, but in the dream, I could the lyrics of the song, and I couldn’t in real life. Also, in real life, I would never be able to imagine the song playing as real as in the dream.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this, and have come to this conclussion:
In our every day life, we hear and see a billion things, and its actually only a very small part of this we think about and remember. For instance, the TV and the computer is on constantly, and in school we hear teachers and students talking about anything, - nonstop. It is only a very, very small part of this you take and remember.

BUT - what if your subconsciousness store a lot of this information in the subconsciousness, without us actually taking notice of it? That’ll be the perfect explanation as to why such stuff occurs in dreams.
If we think about it, sometimes we know things we didn’t even know we knew. But it is a really funny thing, to learn when you dream - because your subconsciousness teach your consciousness stuff you actually didn’t think you know

What do you think?

brilliant!
it makes sense, it would explain a lot about where the info on everything in our dayley lives goes i think ur absolutly right

I once was watching this show on tv and then I fell asleep, but I dreamt the rest of the show and I was able to tell what it was about when I woke up, but I had never actually seen that show before! So I have no idea how that came about…

I think that may be because, that the information you just received before going to sleep is dealt with much better in your dreams than it would in your every day life.

When you sleep, you mess with all the experiences of the day in your mind, and the latest experiences will stand the strongest in your mind, I think. So, the newer information, the more you will remember that exact thing the next morning.

I’ve always found that dreams (at least ND’s) tend to be an almagamation of everything you’ve done/learnt/seen during the day. I always thought of it as part of the mind’s digestive system so to speak.

par example, I watched a documentary (I love documentaries) on tornados a couple of days ago, and that night a tornado turned up in my dream. It nearly sucked me out of the model T ford I was driving! (I don’t know where the ford came from )

It is called tacit knowledge if I remember correctly. During the day we get alot of sensory input, but only a portion actually reaches consciousness, it’s not strange that we know more than we think, even though it is often also the other way around.
When it comes to A doctors jibberish I don’t think the mind would have that much trouble making it up. I mean, you can recognise if stuff being said sounds “doctorish”. That means you know what kind of features, doctor speak has, what kind of words are used and all that. So even though it may be jibberish, and not of any use IRL, it could sound really smart and correct.
I heard some Hyponogogic music once, I was sure it was real then, but afterwards, I realised it was too short, I did however make it come back by thinking of the song, and i thought up the lyrics as best i could. recreated it sort of ok, but, still wrong, I think. It was like I knew them better than normal, but I realised afterward, I was wrong.

I set my alarm clock once to play my ipod. It played a podcast of a radio show on the alarm clock and instead of waking me I heard the radio broadcast in the dream and could remember it and recognized it when I listened to it awake later that day. I know this isn’t what the topic is about but it’s pretty interesting.

Yes, I think it’s all true

I’m reading this book about creative dreaming, and in one part the author talks about this. She tells a story about some bricklayers that were hypnotized. During hypnosis they could tell 30 to 40 different details about ONE single brick, from one single wall they had put 10 years earlier. I guess it’s up to us to believe this story or not  but, anyway…

I have had dreams of great extremes being sucked up into monster F-5 tornadoes and being spit out unharmed waking up in a cold sweat to finding myself laughing at hilarious dream while I was sleeping…one night I was flying in my dream and wake up on the floor right by my bedside with a brused arm.

I red a little about tacit knowledge. It is very interesting, thank you. That might be just what I meant, to put an scientific mark on it.

Even though it’s very hard to convince myself that what the doctor said in my dream were imaginary words, I believe you . But still, listening to such stuff is nothing but amazing.

And the most amazing thing about it, really is, that we keep entertaining and surprising us selves in the dream world!
