slighty ot: dreams aren't linear

My dreams aren’t linear so it makes it difficult when I’m trying to record them in my dream journal. Any way to make it easier or make my dreams more linear? Actually, I’m not sure if my actual dreams were disjointed or just my memories of them.

My dreams are rarely linear. Just write down what you remember

my dj’s are full with ‘can’t remember if this was before that’ and [flash] (that means i have no idea how it went from one scene to another)

Yeah I agree, unfortunatley the nature of dreams and memory of them is that they are disjointed, fragmented and generally stories full of holes or vaguely filled in gaps! The most annoying thing is when you get that tip-of-the-tongue feeling that you can almost remember something more, but no matter how hard you try it never comes to you!

As for advice i’d just say try and gently and passively allow the memories to come to you, and keep trying throughout the day because extra bits will often come to you, aided by cues that happen in your daily life.

This sometimes happens to me, too - occasionally the “end” events of a dream happen first, before everything else does, which would create huge problems for me if I wrote the plot up in the order I dreamed it, lol.

I usually write down the remembered scenes in the order they make the most sense in. Mostly I already know if something was supposed to happen later rather than earlier, but even when it’s not so clear, I look at the bigger picture and figure it out. I don’t see why it should be necessary to write a dream in the order it was dreamt if it makes better sense rewritten differently. As long as all the facts are in there, it shouldn’t change anything.

That’s normal, I would try thinking of the dream as soon as you wake up; then recollect what you remember while getting ready for work/school/nothing. (don’t recall and drive though). Trying to improve your memory is another thing. I would suggest last week’s breakfast or something as a start, how you ended up in a place, etc.

I have to admit, sometimes I fill in the gaps myself… not necessarily with false information, but I elaborate on what happens(ie: travel, and how I got to a certain place.) I mainly do this so that when I look over it again or show it to other people it is somewhat understandable. Because when dreams come random, they are “f-ed” to the point of “f-ingness.”
