Solar System/the Planets

I think the planets are interesting so when I feel like it I’ll post some info I think is interesting about a planet and the posts will come in this order

Mercury, Venus, Tellus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto

I’ll begin with Mercury

= “Astronomical and astrological symbol for the planet Mercury, and alchemical symbol of mercury.”

Mercury is also a roman God,and Quiksilver
1 Mars year is about 88 earth days

  1. highest temperature 430 degrees Celsius
    lowest Temperature -180 degrees celsius

  2. The astronomical symbol “is a stylized version of the god’s head and winged hat atop his caduceus, an ancient astrological symbol.” (Caduceus)

  3. If you have any facts that you find is interesting about the planet Mercury feel free to post them.

And some time after Mercury it’s time for Venus.

Actually, Pluto is no longer a planet :sad:
Universe Today’s article on Pluto’s demotion
Wikipedia’s current entry on Pluto

Oooh, great topic :cool_laugh:. I’m actually taking a cosmology class this term, just for fun :cool_laugh: takes out notes.

In my opinion, Mercury is the least interesting of the planets, but some more interesting things would be that…

  • Because Mercury spins around it’s axis very slowly, it means a Mercury-day is about twice as long as a Mercury-year.

  • Mercury undergoes a double sunrise, so if you were standing on mercury, you would see one sunrise, right after that a sunset, and another sunrise straight after the sunset. It has something to do with the fact that Mercury moves faster as it comes closer to the sun (it’s orbit is rather elliptical) and slower as it moves away…

That’s all for today lol.

I know Kenneth, but I decided to take Pluto anyway, since I’ve learned that it’s a planet :tongue:

and if I don’t have pluto as a planet my “remember thing don’t work”

Mamma Vattnar Jorden Medan Jag Sätter Ut Nya Plantor
Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto

Sure, Pluto is not a planet, it’s a dwarf planetoid—and Europe is not a continent, it’s a peninsula in western Asia. :tongue:

Really, does it even make a difference if Pluto is a planet or a dwarf planetoid? It’s not like Pluto itself will feel the difference; and the new definition of planet (any definition of planet, actually) is pretty useless, since it’s not like the thing will poof out of existance because it’s not a planet or start acting less planetishly.

Exactly Bruno, and I continue to consider Pluto to be a Planet :wink:

double sunrise seems beatiful,
and Olesia, so you’re saying that an Mercurian that is 20 Mercurian years old only is 10 Mercurian days old. That’s a little fun :tongue: Assuming Mercurians exist which they don’t, it’s Marsians that exist :tongue:

Now it’s time for Venus, Women are from Venus :wink:

“Astronomical and astrological symbol of planet Venus, alchemical symbol of copper, and gender symbol for female.”

Venus is the roman God of Beauty
1 A Venus year is about 225 earth days
2 lowest temperature is 228 Kelvin and highest temperature is 773 Kelvin
3 “The astronomical symbol for Venus is the same as that used in biology for the female sex, a stylized representation of the goddess Venus’ hand mirror: a circle with a small cross underneath. The Venus symbol also represents femininity, and in ancient alchemy stood for the metal copper. Alchemists constructed the symbol from a circle (representing spirit) above a cross (representing matter).”

4 feel free to post more interesting facts about Venus

Venus is also almost the same size as Earth :yes:

Isn’t that Venus you’re talking about? Mercury’s year is 88 days long and its revolution is 59 days long. Venus, on the other hand, has a year of 225 days and a revolution of 243 days. Also, on Venus, the sun rises in the west and sets in the east.

Apparently, it depends on what kind of day you’re talking about :lol:. This should clarify things:

Venus is the brightest object in the sky except Moon and Sun (in some moments), can be brighter than -4m (magnitudo). Full Moon is -12m, Sun -26,7m (the less magnitudo, the brighter object).

With the exception of the summer a few years back in which the orbit of Mars was very close to that of Earth. :content: Remember that one? :grin:

Oh, right! :ack: We should save that for the Mars discussion. :wink:

Like Mercury, it was popularly thought to be two separate bodies: Eosphorus as the morning star and Hesperus as the evening star.Venus’s apparition as the morning star is also sometimes called Lucifer. (The Light bringer)

It’s also an inferior planet and shows phases (like the moon) when viewed through a telescope. I have personally seen Venus as a Full, half and a Crescant.

You might want to check out a nice little program called Celestia, completely free.

It’s a nice 3D space program for our Solar System and Beyond- here’s the Screen shots page

Check out the addons page if you want to download other things for it like remodels of planets etc. Nice little proggy had it a couple of years. It works in real time and at extended speeds, it does have asteriods and comets in too stuff like that. Worth checking out if you’re a complete space freak like me :tongue:

Yes, but Mars was then max. -2,8m, and as I said Venus can be even -4,5m bright. :razz: Mars could be brighter than Venus at the moment, but maximum brightness of Venus is much higher than maximum brightness of Mars :smile:

Yeah, I like this program :smile: It contains very much information about planets and stars, and you can see what the sky looks like from different places in the Universe :smile:

Celestia seems very interesting ^^ thanks for the tip Mohegan.
I wonder one thing, what is magnitudo? I know it measures the brightness, but how does it do that?

So the sun sets in east on Venus, best to remember that if I gets lost at Venus :tongue:

How many have waited for this? It’s time for Tellus

Some interesting facts about the planet,
I heard that Tellus have a large moon compared to Tellus size,
Tellus is the only planet with life (I think)
symbol: “The astronomical symbol and astrological symbol for Earth consists of a circled cross (⊕), the arms of the cross representing a meridian and the equator. A variant of the symbol has the cross atop the circle”

“It takes the Earth, on average, 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.091 seconds (one sidereal day) to rotate around the axis that connects the north and the south poles.” (And not 24 hours as you might think :tongue:)

Feel free to share some more interesting planet facts about Tellus.

Blissfulblues: Don’t worry, Mars will come soon :wink:

Why are you using the name Tellus?
When earth or even Terra are more usually used as the name.

the name I’ve heard the most is Jorden(=“Earth”)
and Tellus, I think I’ve never heard anyone called it Terra

and I saw this on wikipedia now, so it seems it’s more correct to use Tellus than Terra

And the reason I’'m using Tellus and not Earth is that Tellus sounds more like a planet, and it fun to use and say.

Planets in Swedish
Mercury=Merkurius
Venus=Venus
Jorden/Tellus=(the)Earth/Tellus
Mars=Mars
Jupiter=Jupiter
Saturn=Saturnus
Uranus=Uranus
Neptune=Neptunus
Pluto=Pluto

Tellus is an ancient Roman goddess of the earth, marriage, and fertility, identified with the Greek goddess Gaea.

I’ll try to explain. First, the power of the light coming to us from a star is measured. The brightness in magnitudo is then given by the formula:

m=log(I0/I) where m - magnitudo brightness, I0 - power for the 0 magnitudo, I - power of the measured star.
log is decimal logarithm.

Magnitudo scale was created by an ancient astronomer (I don’t remember which one) who gave the brightest stars in the sky 0 magnitudo, less bright stars 1 magnitudo and so on. Very long time later, scientists specified the magnitudo scale and measured the brightness of the stars. The brightest star, Sirius, is -1,46m.

(I don’t know English physical terminology, so I could write some nonsense… Please forgive me :wink:)

A couple more things about magnitudo:

Lower numbers mean brighter objects.

Magnitudo is, as said, a logarithmic scale. It works so that a difference of 5 magnitudes corresponds to a diffence in brightness of 100. For example, a star of magnitude 1 is 100 times brighter than a star of magnitude 6. A star of magnitude -4 is aprox. 2.512 (the fifth root of 100) times brighter than a star of magnitude -3

Thanks for all the info about Magnitudo ^^

I think it’s time for Mars now, the planet Men come from, and the symbol is a man with a spear.

“Astronomical and astrological symbol of the planet Mars, alchemical symbol of iron, and gender symbol for male.”

1 Mars is the Roman God of War
2 Mars has the highest mountain in the Solar system
3 Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos, (greek gods??)
4 The symbol consists of a shield and a spear
5 Marsian is a popular Alien :wink:
6 Does anyone know how long it would take to Terrafrom Mars?
7And when will the first man be on Mars?
8Feel free to come with more fun facts about Mars.
9 There could be life on Mars :wink:
