Can anyone suggest some techniques to help me be aware like

Counting 1 - I’m dreaming, 2 - I’m dreaming, 3 - I’m dreaming, etc.

Paying attention to yourself breathing, while counting every breath in and out.

Imagining yourself walking down stairs, counting every step.

Not exactly what you’re asking for, but meditation does wonders for general awareness.

Pretty much the methods you described are how people stay aware while they fall asleep. I suppose you could also include visualization for techniques like VILD in there…
