tell me more about this 'brainwave entrainment'...

Okay, I thought I understood the concept for this but I guess not. I just downloaded a free version of the Brainwave Generator from bwgen.com and the first thing that popped up was a message saying it was extremely important that my left and right speakers were set up correctly. All I have is the internal speakers in my computer; I use my stereo speakers for music and the computer’s speaker works pretty good for everything else. But my question is: does this mean I won’t be able to do this? If possible, it’d be nice if someone could give a brief description of how this thing works. I know a little bit already so it doesn’t have to be too detailed, I guess there’s just some fundamentals that I misunderstood or something idk…

Okay it’s late, that should have taken just a few sentances and I rambled on a lot, sorry…

Does your soundcard not have a place to plug your speakers into?

It might work a little bit, but I think yes, you do need stereo for it to do anything major. In fact, I’d say you’d need headphones.

If you’ve got a CD burner, you can just burn the files to a CD and listen to it with a discman or something. It’s probably better for if you were laying down anyway, and this will allow you to do that.

Brainwave generators use so-called binaural beats. For example it plays 440 Hz sound to your left ear, and 452 Hz to right ear. Your mind perceives, apart from the normal sounds, the difference of 12 Hz. It can help your brain go into a certain state, like concentration, relaxation, trance etc. (called beta, theta and so - they’re at different frequencies of brain activity, I don’t know exactly how, but it can be measured). It doesn’t put your brain instantly in that state, but gives you a slight “push” which helps in meditation, concentrating etc.
The two sounds should be each for one ear only, so it’s rather important to wear headphones.
– That’s what I know about the subject, but I’m not very experienced, other ppl will tell you more.

PS. I tried bwgen with no effect, but sbagen (a free, open-source alternative) worked for me - nothing much, but with it I was very close to trance (I never achieved it though) so I’d suggest you sbagen rather than bwgen - it’s harder to use but better.

Thats a shame. I’ve tried installing this but it wont work. Setup.exe opens in the background, but does nothing.

There is an audio editor called CoolEdit which lets you make your own binaural beat synchronisations using its built-in brainwave synchroniser function. It works fine, and does all sorts of other stuff as well.
Simply load a WAV file, then go to Effects/Special/Brainwave Synchroniser, and you now have lots of options which let you mess with the frequencies through the ranges of Alpha/Delta/Theta etc. You’ll need to know a little about the most effective ranges to use though so I’d read read up on it if you 're not too familliar.

PS. As PAV mentioned earlier, good quality headphones are essential for using binaural beats.

Alright, so I made a preset for lucid dreaming on the BrainWave Generator… but for some reason it won’t let me convert it to put it on a cd. I think it’s because of the length (8 hours) because I can do 20 minute ones. Please PM me if you can help with this or can make it for me and email it to me…

fixingflare if you get this to work plz let me know, i have all the bwgen stuff and would like to put it to good use…

I used SBAgen to generate 15-min. WAV’s and burnt them on a CD.

Well that might be an idea… I could just make a bunch of short files and burn them onto a cd to play in order.

FixingFlare,
8hours?!! That wouldn’t even fit on 2 DVD’s. Why do you need such a long audio? If you can explain why you need such a long continuous audio I may be able to give some advice.

I’ll be listening to it all night, that’s why it needs to be so long. I don’t think fitting it on a cd is a problem, since my cd player can play .wav files. (Which I think are pretty small, right?)

No, WAV’s are big, in fact they’re usually bigger than raw audio CD. What I meant about burning 15-min. files is that I burn a track and then I can just set it to repeat mode in CD player.

Okay well I thought they were smaller for a number of reasons, but it’s still not a problem because I can convert it to .wma, which I know is a small file.

By the way, I knew that’s what you meant when you talked about the 15 minute files. I would just need to make 3 files and then set my player to repeat them the right amount of times.

Why not convert the file to MP3 which( as far as I know) is the most compessed format. There’s various free software available which will do this.
I’m still confused why you want 8 hours in one run though.
Unless there is some kind of theme you’re using here which demands one single run, why not just use a the repeat function on your CD player and make a shorter recording?

WMA is roughly half the size of MP3, and though there is some drop in the sound quality it’s barely noticable… especially on something like this.

Oh and I figured out where I went wrong before, I got MIDI and WAV files mixed up.

I think fixingflare said 8 hrs, because 8 hrs is a normal sleeping pattern, but i dont think you need 8 hrs fixingflare.
I think all you need is 3 or 4 hrs, and maybe time your system to play the audio at a certain time that you know would be right before REM starts, maybe that would be more effective.
Dont hold me to this, cus it’s just a thot.
But if you think about it, it just might work…

I’m also trying to induce sleep a little faster too though…

A member here once tried listening to binaural beats and voice-overs one whole night and woke up not feeling very well and said he’ll never do that again. I don’t think it’s a good idea having a continous sound and binaural beat going on for 8 hours
