Ok I am new to this site and got a couple of ideas about LD please tell me what you think. TIME
Since Dreams are Manifestations from your mind made from random data stored in your brain, time does not exist in a dream. In fact, have you wondered why you usually wake up just as something big is happening in your dream like as if the dream was meant to leave you with a cliffhanger? (I usually yell at the person who wakes me up). Well… the fact that “real” time is passing is just an illusion. If you woke up like 1 hour later than you did your dream would be the same but a little more detailed. Basically this means that while whatever happens in your dream is happening only like nanoseconds are passing but to you it seems like what it is (in the dream). But when you wake up you assume time really past like in the dream and u also thing that the dream ended right before you wake. LD
Lucid dreaming is when you realize that your mind is creating a dream and since it is your mind you can alter it by thinking. But since your still making your dream it could be hard to control.
About Time:
Time isn’t a real, tangible thing to begin with. It is a clever invention. I have trouble understanding what you are trying to say, but I think you mean that dreams happen very quickly and do not coincide with ‘real time’. Actually, some lucid dream experiments carried about by LaBerge show that time in dreams is the same in waking life.
About lucid dreams:
A lucid dream is just when you are aware you are dreaming as you do. Nothing more. It has nothing to do with control, you could actually control a dream a lot without being lucid.
Are you saying that it is hard to control a dream while lucid because your mind is busy creating the dream? I don’t think it’s the same part of your brain, but I am not sure on that. I haven’t had much trouble controling high level lucid dreams at all.
The experiment that you are refering to was actually the one that “proved” that lucid dreaming was real as well.
What they did was measure the eye movements in REM. the lucid dream was to look left then right then left then right and one or two second intervals inside the dream. In the waking world they recored the eye movements, and noticed that the lucid dreamers count of time was almost dead on with real time. This was also one of the first messages sent back from the dream world proving the existence of awareness inside dreams.
Lucid dreams are not hard to control and the problem that most people seem to have is that when they think about lucid dremaing they think they control everything inside the dream, this is not the case, a lot of events still happen at the subconscious level.
It more resembles waking life control over your own thoughts,e except that you can manifest your thoughts into real things inside the dream world were you can not do this in waking life.
Dont be fooled by thinking you are in complete control when you are inside a lucid dream. Although you have awareness, there are still parts of your brain that you do not have control over, although you could alter this with practice and effort.
Keep coming with the ideas, read up and enjoy the ride
I gathered from somewhere that lucid dreams happen in realtime but normal dreams are accelerated. I have little idea if that’s actually true or not, though.
Thank you. I just kind of had some basic ideas I came up that I wanted to see is they made any sense. Since I’m new here I wanted to know if my Ideas were good.
*I never heard of those experiments (now I do). But I will continue to philosophize upon new ideas I get .
it is possible, no doubt, but your recall of the dreams will also effect your idea of time.
Time flys when you are having fun and drags when you are bored. Why? if you answer this question you will come a little closer to understanding recall and time in some dreams
I’m 100% positive that you are right that dreams can happen in nanoseconds but actually seem to drag on and on and on. However I think that in most cases they don’t. The main thing that I have observed that proves that the dreams ignore time occurs after you wake up. Sometime when you are woken up try to go back to sleep after moving a bit (not much, just an arm and a leg) then you will probably dream again, not necessarily lucidly. If you remember the dream (which you probably will because it won’t be deep sleep) try to gauge how long it is. Then see how long you were asleep for. I’ve found that usually it seems like 30-45min but is actually 2-20 min.
you have to be aware tho of false memories that are created by your mind when you are dreaming. Say you are in a dream where you are an agent like 007. the dream starts with you in a room looking at a car, then from there you “remember” that someone was telling you before that you had to drive it around and find this guy. You “remember” that you were shown maps and given details etc etc.
say you wake up as soon as you get in the car, the dream actually lasted less then 2 minutes, but you feel like it lasted a lot longer due to the false memory.
with practice you will actually be able to tell real memories from false memories, but then again sometimes it will be far too real
Wow a lot of past threads are about time in dreams (I probably should have read them first). This makes me feel good because I came up with this on my own from personal experiences and logic. I started this thread to see if my thinking fits in with LD4ALL members. Now I feel welcome here (that is a pleasant change)
This is LD4all. Friendly, warm, like a mother really, except it never nags you to eat your vegetables.
Good post, I read somewhere that dreams last a maximum of five minutes in real time, however it is often difficult to distinguish where one dream ends and another begins. Dream reentry is possible, so if you ever want to complete those Cliffhangers to flesh out your Dream Journal, you might want to try it.
What if your brain becomes overstimulated to you wake up (too exited to sleep). That would explain why u wake up during the best part Yells at mom. But it is not her fault right before you wake up you assume that the dream lasted as long as it seemed an you think your waker stopped it (false memory).
*If this is not a good idea ignore it cause that was just pure logic
Also, I got to go to sleep so no more posts for tonight. LD2NIGHT!
dreams last longer then 5 minutes, the first rem period they can last as short as 1-5 minutes but after a long doese of sleep you are looking at rem that can last up to 45 minutes
lol yes i spose that you can think about it like that, but it seems that you are hooked on the idea that dreams last a nano second sooo… i would suggest you take a read around the net and the forum, try and look for researched evidence, and it should sooth your curiousnesses:)
If you didn’t already know that, then you haven’t seen me in Chat.
Time dilation and dreams go hand in hand, and that is why it gets so damned hard to keep track of how long a dream is. Clocks in LDs are often good dreamsigns, too. Connection?
The eye movements during REM sleep correspond to where you look in a dream, wich is why you can use them to signal to the outside world. If the dream happened in a very short time then the eyes would move very, very fast. Although this is assuming all dreams happen in REM sleep.
Usually we don’t remember dreams from other sleep stages but there is stuff going on in the brain even then. But from there we don’t have any sign as to what’s going on. Except for sleepwalking and night terrors, wich take place during deep sleep.
It’s concievable that there are dreams in that mysterious depth that go by faster than REM dreams.
