A thought just hit me, which most of you will find stupid: The wizard of Oz is an adventorous fantasy book, just like the lord of the ring is.
I can prove it to you, but first: What do you say about that?

Um, I agree? I don’t know. I guess I don’t understand how it wouldn’t be.
In my opinion its more like a fantasy-fairy tale … im not sure how to prove my thesis , but i have the feeling thats is as what you should categorize that book (huh ? )
I think the Wizard of Oz is more of a Sci-Fi/ Horror Story. The Technology used by the Wizard is definitely out of this world. And as for those flying monkees, man they scare the **** out of me!
Sakoda - the actual story is indeed a fairy tale, but I was talking about less the exact words and creatures in the book, and more about the main storyline.
Mr. Happy - Same thing.
Well, what I spoke of, is mainly the fact that the main storyline of the book contains elements that can be used, almost without changes (about two or three, I think), to write a fantasy story such as the lord of the rings/discworld/
I can give you several examples.
I just find it odd, that when I was looking for fantasy books to read (in order to get dreams about them) and I just skipped this one.
If you alter, for a moment, the names, and species of most creatures in the book, you will understand what I mean.
In other words, if you are trying to tell what the book is about without denoting creatures’ species and names, you may find that it sounds almost exactly as if it is a fantasy book such as LOTR.
It actually has an abundance of significant political interpretations.
You don’t need to prove it to me, but the comparison to LotR seems a little off I guess. The Wizard of Oz is great; there’s no doubt the movie version has a song that should replace our national anthem. It doesn’t even compare to LotR in terms of scope, though. Look up the word “epic” in the dictionary, and it’ll say “Lord of the Rings.”
But yeah…adventurous fantasy for sure, regardless of allegorical interpretations.
I had a Wizard of Oz lucid dream. In the dream I was fishing in a lake at a park. My wife was painting a picture of the scene as she sat by the lake. I caught a fish but as I tried to take it off the line it began changing shapes and I realized I was dreaming,
I looked at my hands and waves of light were washing over them. I called to my wife and said “We’re dreaming, look at your hands.” She looked at her hands but still seemed doubtful of whether it was a dream.
I looked around at the park and saw a bunch of munchkins, like from the Wizard of Oz, walking around the park. My intent for lucidity is to call on my spirit guide, the Goddess, so I called out to the munchkins and announced " The Good Witch is about to appear!" Everyone began looking around and for a second I had doubts that she would appear, but then a young girl pointed up the sky and said “There she is!”
Sure enough, down floats a bubble of light and inside is a Glinda/ Good Witch/ Goddess figure. Everyone ran over to her and I did as well. The munchkins were lined up to receive presents from the Good Witch. When it came my turn I approached her, still very lucid and she handed me a small yellow and green toy.
I thanked her and as I walked away I looked closely at the toy and saw that it was a small gyroscope. I showed it to my wife and she said the Goddess gave it to me to help keep me on course. As I thought about that I lost the dream.
dreamster
Our marching band is performing The Dark Side of Oz which is The Wizard of Oz and The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. I never watched Wizard of Oz (not planning to either) nor do I listen to Pink Floyd. :\
laughs That’s excellent Miles!!
I would say that the Wizard of Oz is a fantasy/adventure/fairy tale…I love it…
Film is goshdarnitfreaky!
Agreed; the Wizard of Oz is a moral/political fable on a very prominent topic that was relevant to L. Frank Baum: populism. A now practically unknown political phenomenon, the farmers’ political cause of the time seems to be quite prominent within Oz from my perspective.
Just look up the Wikipedia article, you’ll find a lot.
