Viewpoint in dreams

Does anyone else find that they are often not themselves in dreams? And is this an issue when trying to LD? Last night I had a dream where I was a young boy and as I am a girl that was a bit weird, and later on I switched bodies to his father in the dream, then a DO and later myself again. I’m pretty sure I’m remember it right as I can remember the different thoughts I was having as the different characters. Does it happen to everyone? I tend to get one dream like this a week so I guess its probably a good DS for me.

Thanks, Pirateful

 I often get DO and it switches to 1st person. I also get 3rd person  and been the opposite gender. Im however unmotivated and no DS helps me, even the RC’s suck :yuck:

And it is a good idea to use that as a DS, good luck :cool_laugh:

:content: I’m a DO in dreams many times, too. Like Ghostie, I switch to 1st person most of the time. I like DO dreams, it lets me see things from a different perspective than I normally would.

Yup. Not very often, but yeah… I’d be a character that I’m not, and then become another character without noticing, and then shift into a DO. That character’s point of view can be that of another gender, a different race, a species I’m not, even a fictional character. They have their own attitudes and history, and while I don’t want to discourage you, it’s hard enough to get a word in edgewise when I dream of being myself.

I used to have 3rd person dreams every now and then, and I observed it was quite harder for me to get lucid in them, also because I associated them with videogames and the lack of awareness of the surroundings while playing them, so I decided it was a bad thing, and went on to eradicate it. I practiced awareness even while playing, and resolved to always dream in 1st person, and now I really do.
I’m always myself in dreams, and 3rd person is really rare, except for important/symbolical scenes, I barely get any DO, and even if I’m playing some kind of game, I feel myself playing (and often go in and out of the game, like for discussing with some DC about it).

Thanks for the comments! I think I’ll wait and see if it affects LDs (when I start getting them!) for me then. I think it could be kind of fun, to be someone else in a dream or an animal or something…

I like both viewpoints:

I think that for a while, it might be really beneficial to, as tosxyChor mentioned, always try to be in 1st person and also always be yourself (not just in life but in dreams too :shy: )

Though, somewhere down the line, maybe I’m gonna wanna be a different animal/person/disembodied p.o.v.

But maybe it’s best to hold some things constant while trying to learn, so trying to will always being 1st person & yourself seems like a pretty good one to keep constant.

A lot of times I am both myself and a DO. Or i’ll be a different person and a DO. Then whoever I am and the DO have weird conversations about the structure of the dream.

Most of the time that I am a DO, I am trying to edit my dream as I go along, or I’m analyzing what these things could mean.

Sometimes when I’m one of my DCs, I know things that the DO would know, but I don’t know that as often. And sometimes as DO, I get to feel the dream like a DC would, but not as often.

Yeah I get what you mean, Deusabscondidum. I think thats happened to me before.

Well I kind of had success last night. I was a boy (again!) and I realised that I am not usually a boy, but I ended up concluding that I obviously just switched bodies with someone and then I got distracted. :wallhit:

To be honest I don’t think I can really control who I am (while I’m dreaming :content: ) just yet, I’ll give it a go though.

Before I started with LDs, I had loads of 3rd person DO’s. Now I dont get them anymore.

Yes! Last night I was attempting to do a W.I.L.D. I managed to do it, but my dream was completly boring!! I was doing a math problem in my dream! And that’s not like me. It was really strange. And I knew the answer! Really weird…

I always have third person dreams, where I am obsesving myself.

Does someone know how to get first person dreams? D:

I don’t think that I have ever had a dream in the 3rd person - ND or LD. It is always in the 1st person - is that unusual?

I am usually myself as well - but on very rare occasions (maybe 3?) it seemed like I was male and not female during an ND

Most of my dreams are in 3rd person…but my LDs seem to be more first person.

Well i’m only 1st person in vivid dreams or LDs otherwise i’m myself 3rd or have no clue who i am might be myself though kindof like watchin a movie play out

matt94 - Yep, now I’ve started having LDs I’m pretty much the same as that. In LDs I’m always 1st person, don’t get discourage though if your NDs feel like movies. Last night I had an ND like that and I managed to get lucid in it.

Unless it’s an LD, my perception shifts all the time in dreams. Half the dream could be in first then the rest in third. I had a dream recently where near the end it did some kinda camera thing and I ended up looking at myself from the front (I was a woman with blood all on me XD)

I’ve had both first and third person dreams with plenty of mixed ones (though all of my LDs are in first - a third-person LD sounds pretty odd), and my dreams seem pretty evenly split between “me playing myself” and “me playing somebody else,” that is, I physically am another character. Whether I behave as I would normally or it changes because I’m a different character varies.

I do remember one dream in which I was “playing” somebody else, and when it turned lucid I’m pretty sure I kept the same body. It didn’t really change anything though, since I was in first person by that point and couldn’t actually see myself.

I usually dream in 1st person, though I have had a few 3rd person dreams. The strangest thing though is when the dream’s in 1st person and I’m not actually inside my body, I’m someone else. I’ve even dreamt I was a man a few times. Talk about disturbing.
