What about REAL nightmares?

People have scary dreams of course, some might even put those under the category of nightmares but real nightmares are something far different than some scary dreams and I would really like if someone could help me.

So I’m having a high fever last 2 days, it’s flu or something. Every time I have a high fever I’m having these nightmares, and I don’t want you to think that those are “cute scary” or “a bit scary”… It’s damn disturbing. To explain it better you should know I’m not some coward, hell, I think I’m pretty hardcore, and that is why this is bothering me. I’ve been through some scary stuff in my life but this is the winner.

This night I woke up and I thought I am concentrated in this small dot…so I’m walking around the house now knowing what to do but I sure was scared to death.
And it lasted for HOURS, now it’s evening and when I think about it it’s still scary.

I’ve had many nightmares, most of the time I don’t know what I was dreaming about but I wake up horrified, sometimes I laugh in fear because I know it’s not real but I can’t shake it. I’m actually scared that I won’t throw myself out of the window or something while under one of these nightmares.

In life I’ve seen murders, I’ve seen suicides, I’ve seen many twisted things, but this is like 100 times more scary than anything else.

Is there a way to prevent it? I’m not that advanced in LDing so I can’t defeat them nightmares by converting it to something nice. I need something that will work. Please. And thanks.

I can’t think of any way to deal with nightmares besides lucid dreaming, but advanced dream control is not necessary, just realizing while in the dream that the nightmare cannot hurt you, and confronting the nightmare. Since your nightmares are much scarier than anything in real life, just repeat to yourself that if you encounter anything that scary again, it must be a dream, since real things aren’t that scary. If you keep repeating that mentally, along with reality checks, eventually you should become lucid during a nightmare.

Then you should recognize that you cannot be really harmed in a dream, and face whatever is terrifying you. Do not react to it as you would anything truly dangerous, by fighting it physically, or pushing it away, or running, and things should work out okay.

I used to have nightmares every once in a while where I was paralyzed, and some evil entity would be approaching. All it took was one time of realizing I was dreaming, realizing nightmares have no real power, and confronting what was scaring me, and in every similar dream afterwards, I was no longer paralyzed. After that all it took for me to learn how to get rid of them entirely was realizing that physical combat was not a good way to fight nightmares. Fortunately, my nightmares weren’t nearly as bad as yours; even though they were more frightening than anything real, they almost never lasted longer than a few minutes, but the same methods that helped me should help you too.

I also suggest you read this chapter from Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming, as it helped me greatly with overcoming nightmares. It goes into much more detail than I do, and will probably be much more helpful than my post.

Furthermore, there’s no need to worry about falling out a window or something during a nightmare, as sleep paralysis should keep your body from moving during dreams. Only people with certain rare sleep disorders move in real life during dreams, and to people with those conditions, nightmares are no more dangerous than regular dreams anyway.

Fever dreams are notoriously strange and often disturbing. You say you were concentrated on a small dot. I’m not sure what it means, but it sounds bizarre. It sounds like delirium. I suppose that if you were lucid you would know that you are not really concentrated on a dot. But I suspect that it is more to it than that. With a fever your brain is hotter than usual and as you probably know, it can cause hallucinations. The effect on the brain changes the rules, so to speak. Fever dreams, I would say are best treated by treating the fever. SImilarly, if one took supplements that caused bad dreams, the most efficient way to get rid of them is to stop eating the supplement.
