What are these hallucinations..

They must be some kind of hypnogogia, but no description or symptom that I read anywhere is absolutely correct. I’ve tried to explain this to people (not ld4all) and they just don’t seem to get it. I had recently come to the conclusion that they were night terrors, but through more examination and understanding of night terrors, I am fairly sure that they are not.

There are nights where I wake up constantly and can hardly keep myself asleep. Often when this happens, I have an issue where I sense something is in the room, and approaching me. I do not see, hear (not until late), smell, or any other sense described by sleeping hallucinations. I feel something approaching, and it climbs onto my bed. I open my eyes, and it vanishes. I can even sit up for a moment, but once I lay back down, with in a second, it’s back, and continuing it’s approach. I open my eyes again, gone. As this continues, (closing my eyes), I start to physically feel it climbing either on me, or along the side of me, until It reaches my head. At that point, It usually bites me somewhere. Usually my hand or upper arm if they are close to my face. Also, on a rare occasion when it does get close, I do hear some kind of sniffing, or similar sound. If I jolt immediately to either hit it, or smother it in some way, I physically feel that it is there, and it slowly deflates like I’m deflating a basketball through physical force.

They are not there as long as I have my eyes open, but immediately after closing them, it comes back. In order to be rid of it, I am required to get up, and walk around for about 5 minutes. Then when I go back to sleep, it seems to be gone for the rest of the night. But until I do that, it remains.

This happens about once a week.

I have searched, and searched, and I just cannot figure out what this is. Does anyone know anything about this?

Sensing presences seems a common theme in SP and night terrors, but these seem like neither. Have you told a professional? Do your thoughts affect those things? Do others in your family have similar events or sleep disorders? When did that begin? Have you noticed anything that affects the gravity or frequence of those experiences?

I guess there are recurring “themes” such as presence, not able to move and such in night terrors or just experiencing hypnagogia. It’s very hard to say I would even dare to say that it would be stupid from me to tell you what it is. From my own experiences I know that themes are the same but everything else is specific to the person that is experiencing this phenomena.

But one thing The Nameless One mentioned - thoughts. In that moment when you experiencing this try to look at your thought as an outside observer and see what are you thinking at this very moment. Many times I caught myself while experiencing negative things that I am actually the one that is manifesting them in a way as you do in a lucid dream because you are the source of success or the failure.

From my own experience I had trouble maintaining lucidity first few second of the dream because my first thought would always be: oh I’m in a dream now and it’s going to collapse in a few seconds. After I realized what I’m thinking therefore doing I didn’t had that problem any more.

I believe the same is when you are in hypnagogia state. You are expecting things, thinking about it, manifesting it and at the end experiencing it…

Well why all this goes away after you take a walk - I don’t know. I guess it’s just another mental trick, because you believe/know that after you take a walk you won’t experience this any more and that’s what’s happening.

That is something that I have only touched lightly on. I’ve just dealt with it, and have never had it in the state of mind to bring it up thoroughly or make it a real point. Any times I have such appointments, other things are on my mind, and I completely forget these exist until they happen again. However, this time was a little unique, and I’m a little more focused on it now. It’s going to be a few weeks, however, before I can actually talk to someone.

I am the only one in my family that has this issue, though I do have a disorder that I share with one other. It seems though that I am the only one in my family who has trouble sleeping at night.

I’ve tried to figure out a pattern. I’ve examined my environment, positions, circumstances of sleep, and I am unable to find one. They just seem to come up at random times. Whether I had a good day, or a bad one, it doesn’t seem to matter. When did it start? I honestly do not know. Two years? More? I’m not sure, but I don’t think it’s been much more than that.

As for keeping it manifested with my own thoughts, I agree that that is a heavy factor. Although there was one not too long ago where It was disrupting a lucid dream in which I was trying to ignore it, and carry out a lucid goal I had. It just simply would not leave me alone. I wasn’t consciously afraid of it. It’s as if deep inside there’s a fear, but when I open my eyes, it’s just like. “This is stupid…”

There’s far more frustration than conscious fear involved. Because I am very aware that it is not real, but for some reason deep inside it nags at me to not let it get near me. Something that Is just unfightable.

Last night was fairly unique in a way. I have never actually seen any of the creatures. On occasion, I just simply know what it is, while most other times, I have no idea. It’s just some incorporeal entity.

As for last night, It had reached my head, and I quickly opened my eyes. For a moment, I was pretty sure I saw a very strange large caterpillar, that looked like it was made out of coral. It was only there for a second, and was heavily translucent. As soon as I opened my eyes, I didn’t wait to actually look, I just pounded on it with my fist. As I did, I heard this very quiet higher pitched grumble, or shriek…
Before that, I have never actually seen these.

As for responses, don’t worry about giving me a solid answer to the problem. That’s not really what I was expecting, though if I did, great!. But any hints or suggestions, or someone else having the similar thing happen to them, can help.

Also, there is no diminishing of any control. Motor control, sight, hearing, all of that is perfectly fine.

There is one thing you can do if you ever actually see this being in a lucid dream or even maybe in hypnagogia state. Although this is more on classical nightmares this guy talks about it, I personally never did that because I didn’t had such an extreme situation, sure I had lighter examples of it on which I could use this knowledge but never did it.

Hope it helps, Click!

Fascinating! Thankyou for showing me this video.

I’ve been told before to “face your nightmares”, or “submit” to them, but that has never made much sense. But this idea truly does.

Instead of viewing these creatures as harmful invaders, perhaps reminiscing of my past pets, such as a cat I used to love and cherish, may make quite a difference. Afterall, it very well could feel like her walking on my bed towards me to nudge and lick my face instead of attack it. Infact that may be it’s initial true intention!

That had truly never crossed my mind.

Infact, something just occurred to me… I think it was not long after she was gone that this started happening… I’m actually starting to cry a little, thankyou so much!

I’ve never actually seen what this creature looks like when it first appears. In the past, It’s attacked my face it eventually gets to it. But I now believe that the reason for this, is because I am turning it into a nightmare, rather than the wonderful experience it was meant to be.
