WILD and overcoming the unpleasant sleep paralysis

Hello everybody!

Trying WILD, but I’ve yet to succeed. It seems quite fast and easy to accomplish the state of sleep paralysis, by chanting something simple while laying still. However, sleep paralysis is a highly uncomfortable feeling overall, and so far I’ve always started feeling too physically unpleasant to continue, and I’ve aborted the process.

Last time I tried it, I got further than ever - I withstood the numbness, heaviness and the racing of my heart. However, my breathing got very heavy and difficult, which was too unexpected and creepy, and I once again aborted the process by twitching my fingers. My body was damn heavy and stiff after this, so I suppose I was quite deep in paralysis.

I think my paralysis has never lasted long, only a couple of minutes. But it all feels so nasty, that being in that state feels like a very long time.

So the question is, how long will one approximately have to withstand this all, until one is ready to enter the WILD? I think I was quite close last time, but I’d not like to experience that heavy breathing phase for long! Also, if you have any other related tips, feel free to share.

If you’re already in SP you can go ahead and try to induce the dream. The easiest way I’ve found is to try to imagine rolling or floating out of bed. If you can just begin to get some feeling in a dream body, you can start to anchor the dream. That is if you are completely in SP. If you’re just feeling numbness and other symptoms you may not quite be there.

Out of curiosity, what time of night are you trying this? When you first go to bed? After you wake up a bit? That will change the amount of time you wait considerably.

Rhewin answered everything, I think. I’d just like to add that, for me at least, SP isn’t always the same. Sometimes it’s just weird and vibrations. I rarely get the heavy breathing, I also find that hard to withstand. The trick when that happens though, is to try and stop thinking about breathing. At that point your SP takes over the breathing for you, so when you try to consciously breathe you feel you can’t because… you can’t! So you can try to just relax and know that you are breathing, without counscious effort (not as simple as it sounds, but if you are able to relax and just focus on a dream or on HI you should stop feeling so breathless.

Thanks for all your answers!

I haven’t had the enthusiasm to try WILD during the last month or so, but I was thinking of resuming my attempts. Rhewin, your suggestion of trying to get some dream body feeling sounds good, I’ll definitely try that next time!

The times I’ve tried this have actually been daytime. Doing it after just waking up the fastest/easiest?

mattias, I’ll try to keep in mind that ignoring the breathing is an option

From the perspective of meditation, a lot of getting comfortable with sleep paralysis is two things: telling yourself that it is both necessary and ENJOYABLE (don’t forget this part), and simply doing it over and over again. when you get to the heavy breathing stage, simply turn your focus elsewhere … focus on the pretty colors/objects behind your eyes, or focus on other parts of your body or what it is you’re hearing. By turning your focus away from your breath, your subsconscious will take over and it will stabilize itself.

Good luck! Keep us posted : )

I’ve had my most successful WILDs when I’ve gone to bed early or early in the morning when I’ve woken up for a bit then gone back to bed. I’ve also had some crazy lucid dreams during the day but not WILD and sometimes as a result of caffeine.

What a previous poster said about not worrying about your breathing in the like is on the dot. It might be hard to ignore the vibrations and such but if you continue to focus on your chant instead you might have better luck. Eventually you might roll out. Sometimes I’ve ended up falling through my bed or felt like I’ve been yanked out by my feet.

My biggest obstacle is that sometimes before more somewhere around SP I also see and hear weird things. Sometimes I’ll hear my name whispered right in my ear which had shocked me right awake. Not focusing on these things as well as your breathe is the key so you can focus on your chant/dream.

Practicing meditation is one way to practice letting your body go into autopilot while you still maintain awareness. Increasing one’s focus is key, and different forms of meditation practice (including quiet prayer if you prefer) will help do the trick. Best of luck.

The SP induced by practicing WILD most of the time isn’t SPs in the strict sense. I suggest not to try WILD without first getting enough sleep. Otherwise your WILD effort may simply stop at the stage of the SP-like experience, and you will not be able to get any further. It will feel like you are getting close but the truth is you will never get there.
