your music

pink floyd had a good hand in rasing me, and ive allways thought Roger waters as my saragent father. the wisdom in his music, and words tought me alot which was life may suck, but you have to keep going, and strive to be happy. the show must go on. Roger has allways been my hero, and i just wish he knew how much the music of floyd touched me. music has allways been a big part of my life. do you have any favorite bands that have ment something to you. if so share your story. i would love to hear it.

Very well.
Not much to say though, until 3-4 years ago I was convinced that all music was bad. It was probably the result of the combination of all the crappy American music I was forced to hear in my early childhood while in the company of my mothers ghastly drunk friends and their families,(Britney Spears :yuck:, to name one who’s songs gave me nightmares) and my fathers punk/rock affinity.
Even the songs I actually kind of liked, I made myself hate… children, what else can I say… Children are stupid and I was no exception perhaps?

These days, I really don’t care about the message of a song. If I like it I don’t care if it’s a song about shaving a bulldog and then raping it(not that I’ve ever heard a song like that ) or whatever this is. Sure, I’m a bit embarrassed to like some of those, but what can you do?
Then there are songs I might like if I didn’t speak the language the song is in and/or it was performed by someone different, like this song from the ESC (underwear music!). Well, it’s kind of catchy, isn’t it? Look at him go! Bwahahaha .

That’s how I see things. There’s probably a better and shorter way to explain it, but I couldn’t find one .

funny thing… my band was and is Pink FLoyd as well!

once I was 9, I think, I got two identical cd’s so I went to exchange one and my mother recommended dark side. I don’t think I really ‘got it’ at that age, but a few years later I started betting all the albums like crazy

Even now it’s my favourite band. Although I don’t listen to it all the time. Every now and then I hear a song and end up listning for hours, like I’ve just rediscovered them

OK i know im going to get flamed for this, but in my opinion todays music is slowly being reduced to basicaly jengals, and ring tones. its all get in get out make a cheap album with a one hit pop wonder, and get back to video games. these “artist” hide behind love songs. there to scared to write about there dark side. it will expose them, and i cant relate to love songs, and plastic popculture music. FLASH real art is raw exposure, and your art is supose to make you uncomftorble. if you are comftble with your music, or art. im not saying thia about all todays bands im sure there are some real bands outthere, but for the most part its just crap music. if you want real art that people can relate to dont be scared to journey into the darkest depts of your aole to find those songs. then you will be taken seriously. sometimes music is the only therapy kids can get. im not saying all your music has to be depressing, but it needs to be real, and art. its not an easy thing to do, but thats what heros are suppose do

Well, if that cheers you up, I agree completely, now most of mainstream pop/rap/whatever music is total crud. There are less known bands, which are also very good, even to these days, but they’re getting less and less recognized, sadly.
Mainstream music is not about messages anymore, if it’s got a beat, if it’s from their favourite artist/band, people will listen to it.
But I don’t agree with the latter part, it’s not about which emotions they convey; i could hear depressing music anyday if I turn on the radio, about someone that has broke up or some other guy that cuts himself as a hobby.
It’s rather about how deeply (or rather, shallowly) they try. They don’t really care about conveying a strong message at all, good lyrics don’t sell a song anymore.

agreed, the real bands are not recognized like my secound favotite band Mazzy star, and Hope sandoval its haunting music. its considred depressing, but to me its comforting music that i compare to a warm blanket on a cold winter day. its good music for a rainy day. its real music. people use to listen to intire albums, but now noone has the time. they just throw random top 40 hits on a mp3, and move on with there buissy lives. music now is elevater music meaning sounds to fill in the void of noise, or conversation. people use too be influanced by bands, now there influanced by just a song it seems. many kids living in poverty cant find the good bands of today, or yesterdy they may only have access to radio, and these same kids are probly living in a violent house hold, and they could use a musical hero like Floyd. seems to me this world is becoming more plastic everyday. life must be a dream, because it sure dosnt seem real anymore. i know there are real artist out there, and its sad that they are underground

Your post reminds me of this -

Her green plastic watering can
For her fake Chinese rubber plant
In the fake plastic earth.
That she bought from a rubber man
In a town full of rubber plans
To get rid of itself.
It wears her out, it wears her out
It wears her out, it wears her out.

The song is Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead. I too use to think all the talent had gone out of the music industry. The truth is… there are still great bands out there making great music - they are just not part of the ‘mainstream’ industry. Bands like Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, Blackfield, Steve Wilson, Tool, Puscifer, A Perfect Circle just to name a few… if you are a big fan of the FLoyd you will like this music.

I too was a big Floyd fan as a young boy - infact that is all I listened to! But now, my tastes have broadedend and I am no longer so dissillusioned by the industry. You have to work a little to find good music… I like to use Wikipedia, find out about bands side projects and you can usually find some other interesting tunes. Its a great journey!

People listen to music that appeals to them. Either that or they want to fit in with a certain group… like emos maybe.
But if dumb music appeals to a person, it mostly means the person is also dumb. Or maybe I’m just strange that I don’t want to listen to some dickhead sing about how he wants some girl to forgive him for being an idiot so he could sleep with her again… Who knows, this existence thing is pretty complicated when you start thinking about it. I actually start to understand why those cartoon villains want to destroy humanity so badly: If there’s no humans, there’s no one who’d whine about things like gas prices or pollution or which music is best.
Or maybe just a variation of genocide would do the trick…

Back to the original question: the best way to show my musical taste is this. I believe heavy metal has touched me in a great way, especially power metal - I was very insecure as a kid (the things your family can do for you…) and heavy metal then and now helps me stand up and believe in myself, focus on my root chakra and such. And now when I read/hear/sing power metal lyrics, I get amazed by how often they speak of dreams and some other topics, I can’t help but feel there’s true hidden knowledge in many songs (I suggest Dreamland from Hammerfall).

As the subject of content was mentioned here several times, I also have to bring up Bad Religion. In a world where there are some songs with almost no meaningful lyrics at all, Bad Religion packs up lyrics like thisin 1-3 minute songs.

Just to be my own devil’s advocate, being an amateur musician myself (not as talented as other folks here, for sure), I also like some stupid pop songs with catchy beats. Hey, musically, we gotta know what makes our body shake good :boogie:

Finally, I suggest you all make profiles at last.fm (1st link in the post) - there are plugins for most music player software, everytime you listen to a song, it adds to your database, and soon the site starts suggesting artist you may like. It’s a great help for finding new cool, worthy bands.

In my opinion the best bands are RAMMSTEIN Muse ASP Deathstars and REM

Good point there, but what makes music ‘dumb’?

Personally I like listening to Rock, Metal and blues. But of course, to every situation comes different kinds of music, even music that personally I don’t listen to.

My favorite bands are basically Dream Theater, Symphony X, Stone Temple Pilots, Tool and many others more, I listen to alot of rock

Nine Inch Nails are my favorite band… Pop/Mainstream music is always pretty much crap, and seems like it always will be. Good bands are still out there, just diluted by crap - it just makes it worth more to be a good band when they’re a bit rarer…

My earliest memories are of me listening to my parents playing albums by The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones, among others, on our old turntable.

I remembered the words to all the songs. I can still remember the smell of the vinyl records, and their packaging. I would constantly be exploring the inner sleeves of the albums, looking at all the pictures.

As I got older, around my early teens, I got into punk music. NOFX, Bad Religion, and Sublime were my three favorite bands. I also started to play guitar around this time.

After a couple years, I realized that “my parent’s” music was actually pretty good. So I started exploring all the old albums for myself and really got into The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Pink Floyd.

I loved the feelings of nostalgia I got from listening to songs that were tucked away in the middle of albums. Songs that I had not heard since I was a baby. I could still remember the melodies, and even some of the lyrics.

In my opinion nothing beats the old hard rock and heavy metal classics: Led Zeppelin, AC/DC (funny enough, just like my father likes them), Black Sabbath, Metallica. I did have a Hip Hop phase some years ago (someone please hit me with a stick) which didn’t last long, in my heart I was always a rocker!
Aside from that I also like to listen to a lot of movie soundtracks, think Lord of the Rings.

Todays mainstream pop is designated for the trash can imho, as some have stated already.

Psh.

Lady Gaga is awesome.
