90 minute REM sleep thing..? i'm so confused.

Ok first of all, whats REM sleep  all i know is it stands for rapid eye movement, i can’t find anything explaining it. i don’t just want to be WILDing at any old time and wondering why it isnt working just because i got something wrong.

Also, whats this about 90 minute REM sleep period thing…

Also, another question. When should i do WILD? and how. i’ve heard i do it after WBTB …

Basically what i’ve been practising doing is.

  1. laying on my back with hands on my chest (i feel awkward and unprotected with them by my side) and trying to relax.

  2. i then close my eyes and start counting the breaths i take, (one “in and out” is 1)

  3. try to imagine a picture or something similar… any sign of somthing odd happening

And thats all i have gotten too… Dont know if im doing this right or not…

Also  another question. if you go into SP is it impossible to manually get out of it? or do you have to wait for a certain length of time…

REM sleep is the 90-minute cycle you go through every night whenever you go to sleep. Most people have several periods of REM sleep, most of them lasting about 90-120 minutes or so. This is when dreaming takes place. Sleep paralysis is a normal bodily function that happens automatically during REM sleep–it paralyzes several different muscles in your body to keep you from acting out your dreams. We experience this every night, we’re just not usually concious during it. It is possible to conciously experience it, and it’s not too hard to get out of. Just don’t panic. Take a few deep breaths and try moving a finger up and down. In a few moments the paralysis will end and you’ll be able to move again.

As for WILDing, I’m telling you what I know from research–I’m a newbie with it myself, so I don’t have much personal experience. Basically the concept of WILD is to keep your mind awake while your body falls asleep, thus allowing you to have conciousness during your dreams. I think you can do it anytime, but there’s a higher chance of it resulting in a LD if you do it after a WBTB. Those are easy. Set your alarm clock to about four and a half hours in the future (be sure to do this right before you go to bed). Four and a half hours is a good time because you’ll be waking up soon after a dream. Once you’re awake, try doing something related to lucid dreaming–maybe reading a book about it or surfing these forums. After about a half hour, go back to sleep and that’s when you do the WILD. Your WILD technique is good, just try your best to keep your mind aware. If it strays or your thoughts become blurry, stay calm and try to keep yourself aware. If HH (hypnagogic hallucinations) start to occur, pay close attention to them–the colors, the sounds, whatever. Eventually you’ll end up in a dream.

Sorry if this is a rambling post, this is an interesting subject to me and I sometimes find myself babbling. ^-^ Hope it helps!
