my friend has almost no dream recall… she wants to be able to lucid dream (I’m very good at it, over 70 this year alone, so no general lucid dream tips needed) but she has trouble sleeping. she has back problems, so she tosses and turns a lot during the night. any tips?
she is against taking medications, which of course would affect her REM sleep anyway.
I’ve given her the general tips of keeping a dream journal, not moving/opening eyes when first waking, mantras before sleep, etc.
but maybe you have some tips for helping her sleep/improving her dream recall while still having backpain…
any advice is appreciated. I really like this girl and want to help her. strangely whenever I sleep in the same bed with her I tend to always lucid dream!..
I haven’t tried the techniques myself, but in part 3,4 and 5 of the link below there are some sleeping techniques to make you sleep quicker. https://lucidology.com/101/pdf/
Well, I’d suggest she takes care of her back problem. Those are often caused by an incorrect posture, so just assuming a different one, standing more instead of sitting down, and some corrective exercises would do. She can consult a pediatrician to hear what’s the best exercises for her to do.
Well, if it’s more serious, I still think that’s more of a reason she’d have to fix that; they have busts (trunks?) for correcting this kind of issue.
On another note, meditation would help her pass through the back pain, so she’d be more able to both fall asleep faster, and recall more dreams in the morning. Let her find some method that works for her
They totally work and they’re not just for sleeping. You can use them to help memory, studying, and even just to relax. If you can’t find any free ones there are a bunch of Ipod and Iphone apps for them that are free.
Meditation or binaural beats are good just before bed (optional)
have her find a good sleeping position that hurts the least eg fetal(kinda like curled up in a ball, I use this one), on back, on sides, on stomach, ect
self-hypnosis have her say something like this to herself (not out loud), its important to actually feel yourself relaxing, and not just saying it:
“Alright, relax. Feel your feet getting massaged and the muscles lossen. Feel your feet getting heavier and heavier, they feel so heavy you can hardly lift them. Your feet feel like lead, but are very relaxed, and feel as if they are melting into the bed. They feel completely relaxed and comfortable.” go on up your your body, one muscle group at a time. Spend a large amount of relaxing on her back (cause thats where her problem is, right?) and her jaw musles(they tend to be very tight). then, before she relaxes her head, say something along the lines of the following:
“Good. Now you are very relaxed, and feel like your floating on a cloud. Gravity has no effect on you, as you are as light as air. You are so relaxed that you feel like you are drifting off to sleep. You feel very sleepy, and there is no limit to how tired you can become. Even as you’re becoming tireder and tireder as I speak, you spiral down to another level of deeper and deeper, more and more relaxing sleep. Now when I count to five, your brain will relax, and you will drift completely onto the clouds of your dreams, peacefully and relaxingly sleeping, in a deep sleep. Even now, the barrier to that soft and relaxing realm of dreams is melting, melting into oblivion. Now when I finish counting to five, the barrier will completely melt away, and you will fall into the deepest sleep you have ever known. Ready? 1…2…3…4…5.” right on 5 she should exhale and instantly loosen all her neck muscles and facial muscles (including her eyes), and (hopefully) dift off to a deep sleep.
This is absolutly my favorite method of relaxing, and with it I can conk out in 3 minutes or less, as opposed to 1 hour.
Hope this helps
