genfood

Hi
Today I went to a demonstration protesting against genfood. Important decisions are made these days, they are about what kind of food is accepted in europe, which way it got to be labeled and so on.

While the european people are clearly against any kind of manipulated food, the politicians want to allow it since there got to be freedom of choice, “coexistance” of normal and gen plants. This however is ridiculous, since I don’t believe that it is possible to seperate plants in open nature, wind and bees will spread the new plants until it is more and more difficult to find any natural seeds.

I want to encourage you to take action, since those decisions are going to be made very soon and perhaps can’t be made undone.

I agree! Scientists don’t even know for sure whether or not genfood has negative side-effects. I mean, they’ve probably investigated it for a few months and then stated that genfood is perfectly normal. But perhaps you only notice its bad effects within a decade, or more… Just like some diseases (Creutzfeld-Jakob for instance). Only a few years ago, American scientists proclaimed there’s only a very small chance that genetically altered corn and wheat gets mixed up with natural corn and wheat. A few weeks ago, an alarming article was published in which scientists said already 2/3 or the corn/wheat fields of America contain genetically altered plants (due to bees, wind,…).
I guess that’s an inherent feature of humans: first there has to happen something REALLY serious before we might rethink our actions.

I have heard about some genetically altered plant somewhere. After it started spreading really fast the company that developed the plant started suing people that had those plants on their fields. Because they where patented and the farmers had to pay for using the plant even if it spread naturally. I got really mad when i heard about it.

And I agree that something REALLY bad has to happen before we understand how serious it is. And I hate that people can patent genes.
