I don’t think it is possible to speak a language you don’t know how to speak in real life. Does this count?
ah the tricky thing with that is you wouldn’t be able to tell,i’m pretty surei spoke German in one of my dreams but BECAUSE i don’t know the language IRL i don’t know if i did, so thats difficult to gauge
I think Leonie has a good one there… I think that’s the most convincing one I heard to far, though one might argue that is surpasses the limitations.
Anyway @Ebilshrimp:
That of course depends on what you define as dead and on what you think happens after death. If you would define death as the end of everything yeah you should wake up when you die but I had a different experience once:
I was killed in a dream (shot by some nasty WWII Nazi’s actually) and I stayed in the dream. I was a sort of spirit swirling through the room, leaving my body behind, not existing to the DC’s. Well if that’s not dead than I don’t know what is .
Anyway it was quite amazing and I think it proves that you can die in a dream.
i think by dead they meant “die the proper way and find out what happens after death”. we probably can’t do that in a dream
however i think it’s a really good one with the languages
@ Ebilshrimp, I was thinking the same thing. Maybe if you remember what you said really well and translate it to english when you wake up?
It’s the same with flying or transforming into something different than a human body actually. You can never be sure it feels exctly the same way. Although I believe it does…
Yeah that’s true of course. Then I guess we could put that all in one ‘action’: knowing something (a feeling or course of action) that we can’t possibly know, such as what happens after dying or the sensation of flying/transforming.
ah but with flying you are flying in the dream regardless of wheteher you can do it, its not real but nor is anything in a dream, it doesn’t make it impossible, dying isn’t possible in a dream (i don’t think) because you don’t die, you end the dream or wakeup. with speaking a language you may well be speaking the language, but just because you fdon’t know it doesn’t mean you haven’t.
I think you can experience dying. I haven’t yet but why can’t you? If you can experience flying why can’t you experience dying?
I think your mind can generate much more in dreams than in real life. Just like you experience everything much more intens with drugs. You can sort of imagine what flying will feel like right now but when you’re flying in your dreams you experience it to the fullest, everything is there without a doubt crossing your mind. I don’t know if what your mind generates is the same as the real thing, I actually believe it is. I think that everything is complete in the mind but we can’t reach everything when we are awake. When you think about people who were on the edge of dying and had an out of body experience it is the same as having an out of body experience while sleeping… at least that is what I assume. No one can ever be sure because we only get to live our own life.
It is different with language though… if you manage to remember it you can check if it’s right when you wake up.
you can’t experience dying because you don’t know what it is. none of us know what will happen to us when we die, do we? that’s why we couldn’t tell if it’s true in a dream either. if you, say, died and went to heaven in a dream, how would you know that would happen also when you die for real? maybe that’s just your imagination. so therefore, nothing close to real death.
i don’t know if i made myself clear. it’s kind of hard to explain
I read a book about LD once written by a buddhist. He explained that they used lucid dreaming in preparation of dying. They believed that dying is the same thing as dreaming and to be more aware of your death they practised LD.
And I believe you can experience dying just as real as flying. It is both imagined from the mind…
Well what I was saying is that you can actually die in a dream, we just don’t know if the experience you have is the same you have after dying IRL. To illustrate that I used the example of flying, which we can do in a dream but again we don’t know if the experience you have in the dream is the same you would have IRL.
But Ebilshrimp was saying that it is impossible to die in a dream because you would end the dream or wake up, but that is not true as illustrated by the dream I posted. And I am not the only one with an experience like this.
Point is, you can die in a dream.
What happens when you do X in a dream is what you subconsciously believe will happen. If a christian dies in a dream, perhaps they end up in some dream-heaven. If you die and then wake up, I’d say you have just died in the dream.
Fair enough Blenderman, i’m just speakingfrom my own experience and that of my family, although technically, when you died going to heaven was a new dream… i’m just saying xD
but i know what you’re saying, and i concede mypoint
mm, you are right - have also died countless times in a dream, but i still existed and the dreams didn’t end. i have once dragged my dead body around even, being a soul xD but that’s still not read dying… hm. well, i guess this both can and can’t be done in a dream
I didnt think you could actually die in a dream. Whenever I come to the point of death from falling off a building or something I’d wake up as soon as it was supposed to happen.
nah, you can die for sure just in a different way i guess. i have ‘died’ countless times in many different (often strange ) ways… one time i ‘died’ and dragged around my cold body. apparently it was a trend and many people did it. i remember it felt heavy and cold. another time, i died and was a ghost i think… there were other ways i died too, but can’t remember on the spot now.
i think i never wake up when i died cause deep inside i believe there is a continuation after you die also, i never really feared death, so maybe that’s also why i don’t wake up. i think dreams are very influenced by beliefs, so…
also, perhaps deep inside you’re worried about dying so you wake up before it even happens.
you dragged your dead body around? ouch that’s extreme xD
i suppose it is technically possible thinking aboutit. because Dying is the end of a life, Dying in a dream is generally the end of that dream so you have ended that dream and in a way, that life. so in this sense, you’ve died. one thing i can’t do in a dream, is taste.
i think i taste something but i don’t, also touching, you never real feel cold metal or anything. those things can’t be done in a dream. for instance i held lava in my bare hand once and felt nothing, just a slight tingling.
I have experienced very strong senses of taste. Once I ate chocolate and woke up and the taste were still in my mouth I can recall feeling touch too. And I’ve experienced smell.
well theres me proved wrong again…
yes, i think i have tasted things in dreams too. also, you can definitely feel the cold, the heat and even pain in a dream. you can even wake up from that pain and still feel it for seconds in your real body. you didn’t feel the lava probably just cause your mind didn’t want you to feel it in that dream xD (although i think that’s good
and yes, dragging your own empty body around is pretty crazy although i think at the time i was going to ‘wear’ it again after a while xD when i found out how…
