I have just been trying to make sense of the clothing I am wearing in my dreams, in the dreams where I happen to catch sight of it and make note of it.
I think what is happening is that my dream-self is wearing clothes appropriate to the type of occasion, not the weather, so that sometimes I’m wearing clothes that are lightweight relative to the implied weather.
There are many dreams where I navigate slightly annoying (but not frightening) bureaucratic obstacles: procedures at airports, errands to fill in forms, some friend needs me to feed her pet otter while she is on holiday, etc.. The emotion is not fear, but of being slightly weary of it. In these, I am wearing practical clothing. A ski jacket at the airport (so, in those dreams, I am dressed for implied winter weather), or jeans and a t shirt, and so on,
In others, my appearance is some kind of movie reference to 1960’s/1970’s art house cinema. Jean Seberg in Breathless, Carrie Fisher in Shampoo, Eric Rohmer movies, etc.
If the dream is about going on a date with someone, I am dressed up for it.
Ok, that makes sense. My dreaming self is not worrying too much about the weather, but is very much signalling what kind of movie I am currently in.
