Mankind never ceases to amuse me. Remember the age old discussion about how people give you funny looks when you mention lucid dreaming, and then explain to them what the hell? Well, try this approach: in a conversation that has it fit (someone mentions a dream they had, yadda yadda), you say “but isn’t it funny when you realise you’re dreaming?” or “but what I really dig are those dreams in which at some point you know you’re dreaming”. The point is: say it as if it’s obvious, the most commonplace of things.
Reactions vary widely from the standard approach. From that point, you can mention that you actually practice inducing these dreams as a hobby of sorts, and then the world is open for you to mention the words “lucid dreaming” without getting the frowns. Try that; try the traditional way of coming about the subject, too: it’s amusing to see how people react with ease to what’s pushed upon them as commonplace.
hahah, when I read the title (“outing”) I thought it was going to be something like “comming out of the closet” It would be cool though, to walk around with a t-shirt with “I’m proud to be a lucid dreamer”
anyway, back on topic… Sometimes when I share a dream and it’s a LD I throw in a “oh, yeah, and I knew I was dreaming” as if it were the most common thing ever.
That was the intention. It’s called, a daft sense of humour.
I have an LD4all campaign button.
Same effect, huh? People just nod along and say something like “I love it when that happens”. It’s amazing that the same person would pretty much glare at you if you said “hey, I had a lucid dream tonight” before.
hahah oh, I have a pretty good sense of humor but some stuff gets by me anyway
But seriously, next time I mention LD’s and someone says “oh yeah I have those all the time” I’m going to FLIP OUT! or maybe not. but if you can say something like that with such a “whatever” tone in your voice then I’ll bet you they are having FLD’s!
I think they get freaked out with “lucid dreaming” because they find out “knowing you’re dreaming while you’re dreaming” actually has a name
My Uncle came over to visit a few days ago… he’s into science more than anything else so you can imagine that i thought he would think the whole LD thing was nuts. But… i mentioned to him about my lucid dreaming and explained that its when you realise you are dreaming and he just said “oh yeah i do that all the time… i find it quite freaky” (or words to that effect!) I almost fell over!
It turns out he quite often know he’s dreaming but didn’t realise that it was a ‘thing’, so i showed him Laberge’s book and this forum and he went away saying that it hadn’t occurred to him that he might be able to do something with it!
i had a series of experiences about 5 years ago when i would go around telling my friends about lucid dreaming, usually just kind of dropping it into the conversation of “what’s been happening lately”. several of my friends came back to me soon after, maybe a few days or weeks after the conversation, telling me they had an LD experience since.
i started LDing after i read about it in a book (“Journey To Ixtlan” by Carlos Castaneda). it was as if i only needed to be presented with the idea of it. i think it’s the same for alot of other people, so i applaud this “outing” thing you speak of
