Last night I had an LD and was curiouse to see what pain feels like… So when I was flying I crashed down into the bricks and it felt alot different then it does in real life… It felt like a pump with hard plastic, smooth, not rough like real bricks… So basically I wanted to see your experiences about pain in LDs or just dreams? Can you feel textures? Does it feel like it does in real life?
If you could post what caused the pain, how it felt, and how it was different or same to real life?
When i expierience pain in ND’s or LD’s it is usually an emotional pain and sometimes a feel what u could describe as physical pain but as soon as i wake up i think; that didnt really hurt- it couldnt have, but at the time it felt so real.
I’ve never felt REALLY intense pain in dreams, but once I got shot in a dream and my side twinged a bit. I’ve known some people who say they’ve had very realistic and intense pain in their dreams though…
It seems to vary from individual to individual. Some people feel pain, others don’t. And on another level, pain in dreams can sometimes be caused by pain in real life, for example, you get bit by a bug in the middle of the night, and in your dream you feel the pain, but the dream ascribes a different reason for it (ie, you get poked by a needle at the same moment). That’s happened to me a few times. Once I fell out of bed and in my dream I fell off a horse…
It tends to be more “shock” than pain for me- whereby i am shocked that i just fell down the stairs, crashed a car etc… Although there are many accounts of people having extremely realistic physical pain in their dreams.
My guess would be, the more advanced LDers have this more than novices like me - and hence their lucid world and perceptions are clearer and more realistic aswel.
In my dream tonight I have been attacked by a crow that clawed at my hand. It was an ND, but turned into a LD shortly after this. It felt quite real at the time, but thinking about it now I believe it would have felt much worse in RL.
I once had a dream where somebody sent me pain in a leg over IRC, like a computer virus. The pain was sharp, and felt like it came from inside my leg. Nothing i could do to my dream body made the pain go away until somebody else sent me a patch that removed it. I can’t remember feeling pain like that IRL.
If I feel pain in my dreams, I rarely seem to remember it.
I do rememember one time, though, where I was trying to fly by leaping out of a window. As always, it failed and I fell onto a car. I felt pain, but not “normal” pain, more like the sort of pain that comes from falling and causing vibrations.
Just recently i had a dream where i had a device attached to my stomach. Supposedly there was a tumor just above my navel and surrounding the tumor were thick bronze coloured needles joint by a ring or diameter ~10cm. (this device was supposed to stop the tumor from growing or moving) I can remember feeling quite a lot of pain when i moved and the pain was localised to the points where the needles pirced the skin. I can’t remmeber feeling pain quite like it before.
After the dream i thought that the pain should have been worse, but it was still pretty bad. The memory of this pain has faded a little now, but it did feel real.
Pain in my dreams seem to feel the same as IRL, only toned down a bit since I never had a vivid dream.
I once had a dream where I was trying to get through a metal blast door that opens by sliding up and down. In the dream, the door was closing slowly and I had to get through before it did. I crawled under it as it slowly closed down but I didn’t get through in time. I got stuck as my chest was passing through the opening. I really felt the pressure of the huge door upon me and I could swear I felt my ribcage breaking slowly under the weight… I woke up, I think, from the intensity of the experience.
i once had a dream where in normal life i would’ve felt extreme pain
i got this big burbing rock on my legs(cos it was the end of the world and thee were all these burning rocks slowly coming at me)
and it didn’t hurt, i just got numb and it got black before my eyes, then it was morning again and i woke up
I remember experiencing realistic pain in a few of my LD’s.
In one I was climbing up a gate which i wanted to fly from but i got caught up in brambles and felt the thorns tearing my skin.
In another dream I knocked my ankle on something hard which made it bleed and that hurt quite a lot.
But if I dream of something bigger like being shot (a type of pain i’ve never experienced in rl) I either feel hardly anything at all or wake up suddenly.
A very long time ago, I had a (normal) dream where I was trying to defend a village from attackers. I’d picked up a spear but couldn’t figure out how to use it, and before I could do anything, one of the attackers shot me with an arrow. I fell, immobilized, with the arrow sticking out of my upper chest. I could feel the pain - it wasn’t excruciating like it probably would have been IRL, but it was definite, and I felt it for like a minute as I lay there helpless.
In contrast, I also once had a dream where I was getting multiple shots for some reason. I anticipated that I’d feel the prick of the needles, but I didn’t feel a thing throughout the whole process. At one point I had 2 or 3 needles sticking out of my arm, and I was still blissfully painless. XD
When I used to have nightmares, they often involved excruciating pain, I believe worse than any pain I have ever felt in real life. Violent occurances in dreams like getting shot or stabbed creates agonizing pain - I often wake up with a strong phantom pain that lasts a second or two after waking. I was doused in napalm once by a man with a flamethrower, and it was agonizing. I’m not sure how it compares to actually being doused in napalm though…
Nonviolent, normally painful occurances like hitting my head on something do not cause any signifigant pain, however, other than a momentary sting. Context is everything, I suppose.
One time I had a dream where I was just outside and everything just went black for about 4 seconds like I went unconcious. The world slowly came back to color and I was looking at a ceiling of a hospital in my dream. I can remember feeling a headache.
I’ve NEVER felt any pain in my dreams either. I’ve gotten hurt in dreams, but there’s never any pain. Maybe it’s because I always believed that it’s impossible to feel pain in your dreams. Lol now I’m scared I will start feeling pain in my dreams, but I’m kinda curious at the same time.
Whoa I just remembered a LD I had when I was little I had totally forgotten about that one! I was coming out of a burning building, realized it was a dream and thought “since it’s a dream, I could set myself on fire just to see what that would feel like”. Guess I must have lost lucidity before I had the chance to try anything. Reading about people’s painful experiences, I’m kinda thankful I didn’t do anything stupid lol.
