REM pronunciation

I’m not sure whether this is the right place to post this so sorry if this isn’t. Anyway, how do you say the word REM? Is it read as individual letters, like R.E.M. or a a word, just REM? According to Dreamviews, it’s read as a word. I always thought it was read R.E.M. since it stands for rapid eye movement. So, is it REM or R.E.M? Just to be sure. Thanks.

i think it can just be both but i usually just go with the r.e.m.

Ahhreee, ehmm. I go for the acronym too, but I bet a lot of English words are compound words that were once hyphenated, so dropping the dots in a common acronym is kind of inevitable. Especially when it’s one of those cutesy acronyms that form an actual word, like the S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division.)

So, for that, I’m not bothered by people who say it like “Rem”.

Thanks Scarface, EllyEve. I guess I’ll go with R.E.M. Sounds better in my opinion. And I didn’t know about English words being hyphenated, so thanks for telling me.

For me it differs with the language I’m using. When I’m speaking English I just say R.E.M., but when I speak Dutch I pronounce it as a word.

Thanks Sven. I know a bit more now.

I just say rem. Well in I read it.

when talking to people on a scientific standpoint i say r.e.m.

something like rem/remm, not individual letters.

I just call it Rem as a word, what strange is that? :eh:

In my language the word rem means something else, so I say Rem-sleep

In Swedish it’s a strap, right?
In Dutch it’s a brake.

That’s why I pronounce it as R.E.M. in English. Strange because that’s the one language where ‘rem’ has no meaning as a word.

I say rem like so rr ə 'm , like a solid word.

Thanks for replying, guys. So either REM OR R.E.M, both are right.

Hey dreams.

Yupp. both is right.

But in english, it is the word where you say REM is used the most but in Science, R.E.M is more used.

Alright, thanks for the answer!

I personally say REM as a word for two reasons:

  1. It’s how my psychology teacher says it, so I’ve adopted the habit of saying it as one word.
  2. I’m fond of the band R.E.M., and I would get confused if I started pronouncing the individual letters for both the band and the stage of sleep.

Yes thank you. At least now I have a confirmation from a psychology teacher, and you of course!
