The BIG sleep paralysis and old hag topic Part II

Wait… I always thought that nightmare and sleep paralysis are two different things. All of this time, I always thought that nightmare is a ‘bad dream’ (like if you’re having an accident or something in your dream), and sleep paralysis is something that occurs when you’re not totally asleep. Ah well.

Anyway, maybe this is old for most of you, but I found out that whenever I have an SP, it would almost always lead me to WILD. Instead of trying to wake up, try to calm down and sleep! You would then see the hypnogogia images (or whatever they’re called) at the back of your head, and literally stepping into your dream knowing it. Well, most of the time I lost conciousness, but it’s still pretty cool.

They are: but quite a few people experience the Old Hag phenomena during SP.

Hi, this is my first post

I stumbled upon this site after stumbling upon the wikipedia article on lucid dreaming. I’m pretty sure that i’ve had two “old hag” experiences before. The first involved a summon from Final Fantasy 10, Yojimbo, appearing from my closet and scaring the crap out of me. The second, and worst of the two, involved seeing ghosts of currently alive relatives passing over me. I went for hours thinking they had died. Is that kind of experience normal? I plan on taking up lucid dreaming as a hobby, but now I’m worried that these will begin to occur frequently.

they might, but only if you have SP often,

Well I failed miserably at my first LD dreaming attempt. I’d post the journal but most of it would not be relevant to this topic. This part is though.

Before the match could start I appeared in my bed having to go to the bathroom. I walked to the bathroom, It was very dark in the hallway. The bathroom light worked and I went number one. I began to feel a presense. I turned the bathroom light off, but the hallway light would not work. I then preceded to go to my room, and i viewd my room from a pulled back perspective, either OOB or i was growing very large. I got in bed and saw what appeared to be a creature in a black cloak with a large nose. I verbally dissmissed it as tricks of the eye, and the creature who is upon the womans chest in “nightmare” agreed with me that it was indeed a trick of my eyes. It sat in the middle of the edge of my bed on the right side; It made no harmful gestures and I took it as normal for the world, said good night to it, laid in bed closed my eyes, and woke up.

It seemed jovial in fact. For reference the creature looked exactly like the one from this article sciencenews.org/articles/20050709/bob9.asp that I read earlier tonight. I got the link from the second page of this topic so it should be fine. I think I may be over my “old hag” fear.

I have the amazing ability to pretty much have SP occurences everytime iw ant. The easiest way for me to induce them is strange so I’ll describe them. Basically i go to school at 8, so I’m up at 7. I generally go to bed around 1 or so. 6 hours of sleep, and then 3 hours of wake, class from 8 to 10. After class I go to sleep in the library. I go upstairs and cus theres no couches (damn community colleges) i sleep in little wooden study cubicles. I have to sleep laying face down on a wood table. I have a wierd thing where when i sleep my throat opens up and my stomach ends up getting a massive amount of air in it. So I wake up periodically. Anyways I have class again at 12 so I can catch 2 hours of sleep this way. About an hour into sleep/wake cycle, i get the vibrations, and get sucked into the sleep paralysis. Now a few things about my SP’s that are strange. First is the fact that I’ve never seen anything at all. No old hags haha. Also, and for some reason people really seem to doubt this, but I CAN open my eyes during them. Barely, its a struggle. I certainly can’t move. If I open my eyes during the paralysis though what I see is basically what I normally would except everything seems bright and over saturated. I can normally force myself out of the experiencs by just screaming in my head. I don’t really panic anymore but i do get anxiety because I can never tell if I’m breathing or not. So normally i force myself awake after 30 seconds or so. I’ve tried numerous times to induce an OBE but no matter how hard i try to “rock” or “lift” (as I’ve read in some techniques) I can never get myself to lift out. Its frustrating because I feel so close yet so far. Last time I was more calm than normal so i tried a couple times, the closest i got was an odd feeling but thats all it was. Also i started to panic about breathing and when i woke up I had a headache, possibly from really not breathing? So i wanna try and be careful about it. Any advice on achieving an OBE would be great, It’d be neat to be able to cruise around a bit before class haha.

a few notes to january:
first of all: OBE is often associated with an NDE in other words, you seeing yourself from outside your body when you have an NDE
i think you’re referring to AP or astral projection which is actually what an OBE refers to you “project” your self out of your body

i have 2 techniques i’ve heard so no credit to me:
1: rebuilding(non SP):for example when you’re reading a book you close your eyes and try to continue “reading” the book
after a while you’ll get HI(i got until here and then i usually quit), ignore the HI and keep rebuilding the “scene” you were in before closing your eyes
2: the rope technique: while in SP, you can try to move out of your body (in this case for the rope technique) by(imagining yourself) taking hold of an imaginary rope in front of you,
allso, i don’t think you’re supposed to open your eyes:P

Theres the rope technique.

The object technique , you can choice real object in your chamber and when your in SP , you try to go toward them. But you have to think really hard about it.

Theres the jet skiing , you try to think your pulled by a skiing rope.

Theres the roll method. You try to roll outside of your bed. (Dont think it will work if your sitting.)

And theres the real method. You put a real little rope in your chamber and while your trying to OBE you try to catch it.

And the last method that I use sometime is just trying to go high in the air. Just the feeling your separating from your body and going toward the air. But I dont think its a easy method.

I used a tchnique two nights ago and just a few minutes ago that seems to work. Maybe it is already known but I’ll to try describe it anyway.

Basically what I do is to imagine my self doing swimming movements and try to dive inside my bed by doing it. After a while you feel like you are really moving, and by rubbing your hands and breathe deeply then you should be in a clean and vivid LD. :content:

To my recollection, I have only experienced sleep paralysis once, and it was only a little bit over a week ago. In my case, it wasn’t even scary at all. To be honest, I’m not even really sure whether it was sleep paralysis or a very realistic dream about it. I woke up from a scary dream, thinking thank goodness that was just a dream, when I realized I couldn’t move…:anx:

Instead of panicking, I just relaxed, closed my eyes, and tried to go back to sleep. I’m not certain whether or not I even encountered an old hag, if I did, it didn’t do a good job at scaring me. I was facing the wall, and I could swear I heard footsteps behind me at one point, then I felt a finger lightly press the back of my neck…more interesting than scary though. At least compared to the dream I had before waking up!

So in conclusion, sleep paralysis and the old hag are not always something to be scared about, if you encounter them at all.

You really encountered a SP , im sure. The effect that you describe are a hit-in-the-mill.

You encountered well this effect , thats the thing to do.

Everytime I go to sleep I say to my mind that everything that im gonna do is create by my mind and there is no danger.

Thats the attitude to be and you will never be scared by this kind of thing. And nightmare will be almost extinguish…

But youre good because the first time I haved SP I was a little bit scared but now I think they are funny.

Nightmare - The cold women - Feb 23, 2006

Before beginning I would like to say thats its near 5 years I didnt have nightmare and the one before
that was not very scary. I have to go back to my childhood to find good nightmare.

Anyone have heard about the cold women ? Dont know why but after the dream that was like I read
somewhere about that nightmare … Any idea someone ?

The dream start normally . Im in like a mini-van but look a lot bigger. Im feeling im to my friend house
OD. Two DC that I didnt know about are here with me. The one that have the mini-van look a lot like
someone who like girl… You know the big fat lazy men that dont miss a occasion to look at a woman.

Were talking about his mini-van that he have to change a couple of things because the van getting very
old.

Like coming from hell , three woman are standing outside and looking from the window . Theses woman
dont look like normal. At first look , they looked like Alien , yes you read right alien. I dont remember
them well but we can find that there here not normal and look very satanic. I was feeling terrible cold
when they were standing outside watching us.They were projecting winter … Maybe because these was
dead woman.

Next thing , the scariest moment , im literraly in my bed in sleep paralysis. The thing is I was dreaming
of Sleep paralysis not doing it for real because my bed was not at the right place. I was in my older
chamber. So I know I was dreaming of Sleep paralysis and not doing it. The scary thing is I haved a
rope to the neck. Like the cold women wanted my dead and thats was the way to scare me.I was just
feeling the rope pulling upper and that was really hurting my neck. I almost chocked… That was really
hurting me. Maybe at a time I die because…

Im in a Normal Dream after that. Im in school. First thing I do is checking my neck through the school
window, they ware trace of chocking really bad. So I go looking around. There were many random
Dream Character. I go to the ping pong table and there a DC that really want to help me.

Its freaky how your mind play on you :I ask him if in a dream or I just awake. He say that him in a
dream and dont need to be scared. He say to me that this was the cold women that attacked me.
Finally he say to dont say that to a certain teacher (Jeanno) because he wouldn’t believe it.

Finally I awake scared. I was not fully scared because you know im not a child anymore and that I
have a good knowing of dream but the sensation of the rope was with me a lot.

I do a Reality Check to see if its a False Awakening or really me and it was In Real Life. I touch my
neck but I dont seem to have a rope injury . Hourray !

What does this mean ? The false Sleep paralysis was very weird.

It was a true sleep paralysis experience IMO. When you experience sleep paralysis, you’re hallucinating. So your bed hasn’t to be at the right place. The fact your bed was at a wrong place made you realize you were dreaming and it’s a good thing.

And the difficulty in breathing is classical in SP.

I haved other SP in my life and I were always in the right chamber and seeing my chamber through my eyes.

That was the first time that I was hallucinating on that (surely because of the cold women that I made a nightmare about that) and the first time that I was having problem breathing …

I swear the rope was really hurting me I dont think you can hallucinate hurt in a SP , what do you think ?

you can feel pain in dreams… it probably means something is wrong with your body and you’re dreaming about it…

what i’m thinking is maybe sleep apnea, where you stop breathing for periods during the night… since you had a rope around your neck, but who knows.

You can definitely feel pain in dreams though, its just not that usual.

and for SP I agree with you, there is “dream SP” and real “SP” in dream SP you can generally get right up and go lucid and do whatever you want because your environment is all crazy, but in real SP you’re just in the bed completely paralyzed and the dream is pretty much over, your body just hasn’t woken up yet.

Sepultura123, do you think I can merge this into the BIG SP and Old Hag topic? All what you describe is very interesting yet normal and I don’t think it’s at its right place in the Beyond Dreaming forum.

Go ahead it will be a pleasure for me.

Topic merged.

I’ve read it about the WILD method and how you get to see scary stuff, like the old hag, or that you would see yourself climbing some stairs… but, unless I didnt understand it right, aren’t this kind of things too subjective to be put as something that can happen to anyone ? Maybe I’m not understanding right what the old hag means.

Yup it can happen to anyone.

Even if your not doin WILD you can get it. WILDing increases the risk.

I got cisit from the OLD Hag 2 days ago, and it wasnt fun!

But when you say old hag, you mean something like this
coasttocoastam.com/timages/page/hag_jam1.jpg
or
flicksofhollywood.com/images/Ron … %20Hag.jpg

or when you say old hag, you’re just using this as a term to describe something scary that visited you while trying to get a LD.
Because it doesn’t make too much sense that everyone gets a visit from the old hag, unless of course, that anyone who got it already expected her to come.
But anyway, guides about LD should not mention things as specific as the old hag, scary experiences while WILDing or the set of stairs. This is too personal to be told to everyone as a side effect that might happen during a certain LD technique
