Thinking about WILD

Since I’m new to all this, I’ve been reading up about it and I’ve decided that I should probably choose WILD (counting method). Are there any precautions to using this method? What am I to expect from it? I’ve also heard that it can be quite scary, so I’d be very grateful if someone could answer my questions.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Neko! Welcome to the forum!

There are no precautions to using this method. The only advice I could give is this one: sometimes, your mind becomes no more aware of what you’re doing and you begin to think about other things. Then just focus back on counting.

You are to expect entering consciously the hypnagogic state first. Thus you can have hypnagogic hallucinations (visual, auditory or tactile hallucinations). Visual: you begin to see sort of 2D random images. They are in front of your eyes like a movie, so they are generally not scary. “Tactile” (I think cenesthetic is a better term) : you may have floating or falling feelings. The most surprising HH may be auditory HH. Nobody has the three sorts of HH. They generally have just one or two sorts.

When you have HH, don’t be disturbed by them. The way you enter a LD will generally depends on the sort of HH you have. Good luck on your WILD attempts!

Thanks Basilus! I’ll be trying it out tonight, I hope it goes well. I’ll report how I do tomorrow and, if I get an LD, I’ll post that here too… if I can recall it…

I dont want to scare you but I have yet to meet someone to succeed with WILD on the first try :bored:

Yeah, it probably won’t work on the first try. Although if at first I don’t succeed, try and try again I guess. :content:

Edit: I was just wondering, what’s the difference between a successful WILD attempt and a failed WILD attempt?

Well, I’m gonna go to bed soon, so I hope this goes as planned. I’m thinking of flying through the Grand Canyon and changing into a girl (don’t ask).

G’night all. :peek:

I haven’t heard of anyone doing anything perfectly on their first try, save breathing!

A successful WILD is where you actually go INTO the LD. A failed one is where you stay up and can’t fall asleep 'cause you were focusing too much.

That’s one of the difficulties with WILD - balancing focus.

Also, WILD’ing differs from person to person. For example, you’re attempting a counting technique, while Basilius suggests that you might see HI. I have never entered a WILD via HI, and I rarely use the counting technique.

Plus, it’s easier to try it with WBTB instead of doing it straight to bed, though it’s not impossible.

I don’t believe there is anything scary about WILD. SP might seem scary, but it happens every night anyway, and the only difference is that you’re actually aware of it happening. Old hag happens in rare cases and is nothing to be worried about.

If you’re worried at all, just remember it’s all in your head!

Oh, don’t forget about the “feeling” halucinations (Sorry, don’t know what to call them  ) It can feel as if something is touching you. (I’m not sure if this can happen with WILD, I’ve never had a lucid dream. But I know that SP can include this, but it’s very rare.)
When I was a child, I had this along with an auditory hallucination. I felt like something was grabbing my legs, and it was screaming/roaring. Unfortunately I didn’t really know about dreams so it was SCARY. I was only able to move my upper body throughout it, so it was even worse

Ah, my first try didn’t work. Just what I was expecting. Although I did get a partial effect of it.

I relaxed my muscles from head to toe and back up, and I decided to count 1, I’m dreaming, 2 I’m dreaming, and so on upto 100. When I reached about 20, I felt quite heavy, at 30, my hands went numb, and at 50 I started to “swing” to the left and right. It was really weird. Then later on at 70, I got that WOM WOM WOM sound I’ve been reading about. I even got to the stage where you go all fuzzy and you feel like you’re dying, but I wasn’t alert enough to make myself lucid. I unfortunately feel asleep without noticing and woke up around 5 hours later. Although, when I was feeling tired at that time, I decided to try and fall asleep again as quickly as possible and make myself lucid, but it didn’t work.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll read about WBTB to see if it’ll be more suitable for me. I’ll be trying to tonight possibly.

Great attempt Neko! It seems to me it was a good result for a first try! You managed to have cenesthetic and auditory HH while just counting up to 70. Waw! Just keep it up! :good:

If you use to have this kind of HH, you can perhaps try to roll over and spin on your axis (in a imaginary way or course) when you have them. It’s a technique which is use by many people when they have this sort of HH. They use to roll out of their bed. Another technique is trying to intensify these rolling/falling/spinning sensations. Stange sounds are only useful cause it means that you’re deep into the hypnagogic state so you can try to enter a LD. I don’t remember of people who use it in another way than an indication.

About WBTB, it’s said to make the WILD’ing process easier. So it’s useful if you can wake up after 4.5 or 6 hours. If you use it with WILD, you don’t need to wait for a long time before falling asleep again. Some people even don’t go out to bed, they try to WILD just after they wake up. Yet if practising this, you tend to immediatly fall back asleep without being aware of it, you should go out of your bed, put some water on your face and go back to bed.

Good luck on your next attempts!

Thanks for the compliments Basilius! Now that I know what to expect, I should do it a lot better tonight. :content:

im glad i read this topic, i always wondered why when i tried WILD i felt weird, but nothing ever said i was close… it was always seeing something or hearing it, yet that nnever happened to me, BUT! i always have the falling/rising/swaying feeling, everytime. now that i know this, tonight, i have a new lead!

I WILL get a LD!

Last night didn’t work either. I got roughly the same as the night before, but without the cenesthetic hallucinations. Although I was able to get 2 ND’s.

Hope you can do it Ledgem :content:

I always get the cenesthetic hallucinations, particularly the feeling of spinning around. Sometimes I imagine a rollercoaster that spins me around and around in the same way I feel myself spinning.

This intensifies the spinning feeling, but has never actually resulted in an LD for me. Good to know that it can, however. I suppose I’ll try doing it again. :content:

Zaedros, from what you say, you’re very close to a LD IMO. Keep up trying and good luck!
