One thing that could be said about my dream diary entries is that I write them “like an ethnographer” of the dream characters.
What dream characters actually did in the dream is treated as an observed fact, and written in the diary entry. Their facial expressions etc. can similarly be noted. But I don’t have direct access to what is inside their minds, although you can often guess, so what their motives were is left for the reader to infer. It isn’t that the dream characters don’t have emotions (fairly clearly, they do), its that I’m writing what I observed.
This is stylistic choice about how I write dreams that I only just really thought about. I dont think there’s anything wrong with doing it differently. Its just that Ive noticed there’s a choice to be made about how dreams are written,
